England 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver

Bit of a late reply ( short notice holiday ). Anyway decision made, I'm selling Big Cry
Transfer box is £500.00 plus fitting cost. Been told around 5hrs labour. If I was able to keep it after having that done I would as been a really good car. It's going to be dead money for me as my daughter now has 2 horses that she shows. Weight of trailer is 925kg and one of the horses weighs 680k. Don't even need to weigh the other one as I know I'm going to be over the towing limit.
Dealer has offered me £6200.00 to buy in which is low Shocked but it's a quick sale in next couple of days and unfortunately, needs must.
Will be stopping on this site as hope to buy another if I can find a suitable tow vehicle that I don't have to dig too deep for.

Hi Katarina

There's no obligation to change the Haldex if it's the rear differential which is faulty of course.

I don't know if it can be eliminated, ... maybe guys here can give you answers.

--------------------------------

For my car, here are the news

The vibration at 140 km/h has gone ... Whistle

Now, the car has developed a groaning / creaking brief noise from the rear and occurs only when the wheels are on half or full lock whilst pulling out at a junction from stationnary.

exactly the same symptoms as described by our friend LR NUT in his thread http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic26122.html

a rear diff at 20 000 miles and now the Haldex seems dying or already died ... at 36000 miles what a joke Neutral

Hi Katarina

I am no expert, but I see you have not had much response. First, you do not say whether your car is manual or auto. From what you describe, with noise both forward and reverse, your mechanic may well be correct, the differential may be at fault.

If it were me, living in the UK, I would contact Land Rover Customer Relations (you can do that through this forum) There has been a history of differential problems and LR have been known to help by making a financial contribution to the repair. As you are in Slovakia, I do not know if that would work for you. LRCR would require you to have the car checked by an approved LR dealer to confirm the diagnosis.

Hi Bob,
thanks for advice anyway. It's 6-speed manual Freelander 2. Because I found no answers I took my car to Land Rover service dealer last week ... and true is, I don't know exactly what to do. They said to me, it's front differential problem. Only one option they can do for me is to change whole NEW gearbox, which is too expensive (cca 8.000 EUR incl. VAT)! It's maybe faulty bearing (costs probably couple of EUR's only), but they can't order just faulty part. Other option is to find gearbox removed from other Freelander 2. But I'm not happy with this solution ... could be problem with it later as well. So now I try to find someone from UK I can buy reconditioned gearbox.

I don't understand, is the problem coming from the front diff or from the gearbox itself ? these are different components as far as I know

Be careful.
There is a small gearbox after the main gearbox, this transfer box takes the power from the main gearbox and rotates it through 90 degrees and sends it to the prop-shaft that drives the rear haldex/diff/wheels.

These transfer boxes do fail - a lot more often than the main gearbox, they are relatively easy to change, a service exchange unit will cost around £450. As they fail you will get a lot of noise from them especially at low speed when the system is in 4x4 mode (the transmission is in 4x4 up to about 20mph).
On mine the coupling between the two gearboxes failed (£100), this damaged the input shaft of the transfer box. Still both parts came to a lot less than the price of a new main gearbox, and if you are reasonably handy with spanners you could do the job in a day on the driveway. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Oh GOD! Now I become more confused as ever before. I don't know ... I thought front differential is part of gearbox, so this would be the reason, why new gearbox was offered to me....

Katarina.

Hello Andy, thanks a lot for your answer, but as mum of 2years old girl I'm handy with baby bottle more than with spanner, unfortunately. Confused But any advice is more then welcome, so thanks a lot once again. I truly believe I'm not the only one girl here (forum).

My 2011 fl2 developed the seemingly standard whine in the rear axle at 42000 miles I spoke to my local LR dealer both on the phone and face to face who denied all knowledge of the problem and in fact told me it was very unlikely to be the diff but was either the wheel bearing or the tyres (which happen to still be the original tyres). then they told me I would have to pay £153 +VAT for them to diagnose the problem.
I then contacted Bell Engineering and discussed the problem - they confirmed that the problem was the diff nose bearing - I drove the vehicle to Kidderminster where the diff was changed for a rebuilt unit with an uprated bearing - the Haldex was serviced and all installed back again within 2 1/2 hours all for less than LR wanted for changing the bearing.
That is what I call service - It is a pleasure to do business with someone who knows what they are doing and does it very professionally
I cannot recommend these folks too highly - they knock spots of my local LR dealer who I will never use again

LRCS take note..... A sad state of affairs when their franchised dealer is beaten hands down by an unfranchised specialist in product knowledge, customer focus and (not surprisingly) price. Yawn 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

I droped the car at the dealer last week ... few days were necessary to have the approval from LR UK to change the haldex unit under warranty. Fortunately, a unit was available in the stock in Casablanca Thumbs Up

I should take it back next tuesday. Now .... less than 40 000 miles and already a rear diff + haldex Yawn

what next ?
