Have carried 120, 150, 180 & 150 (a month later) second hand roof tiles at 3.2 kg each plus some dead weight behind the wheel of 85 kg! The car handled perfectly and the weight really didn't seem to make that much difference to acceleration off from the lights but I was not trying out any speed tests. 4 x 110 km round trips. I was extremely careful driving and also avoided Sydney's potholes and used better smoother roads which is a bit longer trip. Also tied the tiles back to the rear seat anchors. Also tried to have the weight forward as possible and as low as possible to keep it in the centre with some tiles in the passenger foot well.

i picked up some top soil a year or so ago, this was pre bagged and I got about 18 bags at i would estimate 20+kg a bag, so about 360kg maybe more , this was the rear seats all down, with the bags stood one high covering the entire area

You can carry as much as you like providing the axle loadings are not exceeded, it is about 500Kg depending on the model, HSE and Lux less than TD4S, you would need to stack more towards the front seat backs and less towards the tail gate. Providing you can achieve the above it is possible to legally exceed the GVM by 100Kg but restricted to a maximum of 60mph. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

There will be still plenty of room in the car with 500 kg of rock. As said above stack it as far forward as possible and move the front seats forward. You may not need a full fuel tank so you could save 30 kg or so.

With 2 allotments plus gardens my motor gets a very rough time in respect of weight and includes pulling a well loaded 5cwt trailer often. Car copes fine but expecting to pay for a full set of of shocks/struts sooner than the average owner. No idea what a modern caravan weighs in at as I am not of that tribe.

I doubt it, I'm sure you are not thrashing the car when fully loaded, simply from a safety point of view. I haven't been down a cave for decades, prefer to view them more from a tourist aspect these days! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device! If anyone is interested I went to the quarry and drove back with 390kg of stone on board according to the weighbridge. I had the back seats down and spread the stone towards the front and put some in the passenger footwell. Car felt and drove as normal although I did take it easy over bumps. Job's a good'n. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
