I live at the end of a lane and nearly every day I get someone outside my house following a SAT NAV and looking for hotels or B&Bs that are within about 100 metres of them. People seem to have total faith in these things and have generally driven past the places they are looking for. They no longer carry maps and when some discover that they can't get a mobile signal they freak out. Recently I had a tearful Chinese lady who barely spoke English and was navigating with her iPhone which had lost it's signal. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

What you've described, Dorset, is people relying on post codes to find an address. They seem to think that it'll take them to the door of wherever it is they've booked. But then we all know that the roads are clogged with morons. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE |

I agree, I also have large Curtainsider lorries stuck on my country lane due to Sat Navs..

I drove around Europe for 4 months without a GPS, mobile or computer. It was great getting away from the rat race. If we needed some help we just asked someone and they were more than happy to help. 1:800,000 maps are too small. 1:500,000 is just enough to see small enough key roads. Then we occasionally got local maps from information centres if we needed them, but it really was not necessary, it was more out of laziness of having a larger scale. Italy was a bit of a pain with a shortage of street names. Got a bit lost once but still knew where we roughly were. I can't see how one can actually get lost as such! The locals could not have been more helpful. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
