Machine gun noise when changing gear

Hi All.

Great forum and tons of useful info on here but I haven't been able to find anything to help with a noise we have just noticed.

We have a MY14 FR2 XS manual. 25k. When driving up a steep hill yesterday I had to drop down a gear and gave the throttle a "blip" between gears to bring the revs up and it sounded like there was a small machine gun sound from underneath the car. When on the level I tried it again and it only happens when you change gear and "blip" not just pressing the clutch if that makes sense.

The sound is the same every time, 6 clicks. We rarely change gear like this so haven't noticed it before but it doesn't sound right.

Any ideas?

Synchromesh problem? Is it on all gears? We have had two FL2s that developed the same fault, a rattle when going into 5th which got progressively worse until it wouldn't stay in 5th. Eventually had the gearbox refurbed under warranty. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Yes all gears but only when I blip. What mileage where yours at when it started?

Started about 40k in both cases. If it's in all gears could be clutch dragging and you are hearing the synchromesh trying to match the shaft speeds when you blip the throttle (why do you do need to do this anyway?). Clutch drag could be caused by slave or master cylinder problem. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

(why do you do need to do this anyway?) a very good question and the simple answer is I don't. But having done it the once and hearing the noise SWMBO would rather like to know what it is.

We find that when we are loaded with dogs and passengers and climbing a steep hill with the aircon running you do run out of power quite quickly and a change down (or 2) is needed. Without thinking I blipped it between the gear change to raise the revs back up. Don't think I have done it in this car before so it might always make that noise.
