I've had dozens of similar emails over the last 5 or so years. I believe the next step for anyone responding is to ask for some money up front so that the transfer can be arranged. Needless to say no money will be transferred.

Most of these originate in Nigeria because it is a notoriously corrupt country (David Cameron said).

The ones asking for catalogues and quotations to supply goods normally involve the bogus customer placing an sales order and asking for a pro-forma invoice. They then contact you and say that their bungling accounts office have overpaid and can we return the overpayment.

The first time this happened to us, we checked with the bank and sure enough there was a credit for £55k on our account. We queried with the bank and the scammers had mailed a cheque direct to the branch, but from looking at the statement it was not that obvious.

Needless to say the cheque bounced a week later!!
