Enabling towing electrics

I recently fitted a genuine LR twin electrics kit from Duckworth to my 2007MY FL2. I just hooked my trailer up to the 12N socket to test them, and nothing. No lights on the trailer (which I know work).

I was planning to get the dealer to do the relevant bits to get the car to recognise the electrics and turn the parking sensors off/show the trailer light on the dash, etc. but thought they would still work without doing this? I have checked all the fuses in the boot and the trailer control unit and all seem fine.

Anyone else been in this situation and can advise me?

Hi just done the same fitted detachable tow bar to my 2011 FL 2 sport and dedicated electrics from Duckworth's. I had an ex work colleague round who specialises in Land rover diagnostics plug in auto logic equipment to code the new Fomoco unit He had to get a software file sent from Land rover and install it in my ECU. I understood that the electrics wouldn't work unless software was installed so hope this helps Alan.

That kind of makes sense, thanks. Mine's in for a service a week on Tuesday so will have to get LR to do it then, unless my local indie can help.

So I popped to the local indy today and he enabled the towing module in the ECU. Came back home and hooked up the trailer (two actually) and still nothing. Going to pop back in to see him tomorrow morning, but I'm guessing he's not done this before. Anyone have any specific things I should ask him to do? How do we go about "getting the software installed"?

There is no software to install, its a case of enabling what is already there. I'd be interested in your reply tomorrow.

Me too now. Two posts above seem to suggest getting software files and coding the Fomoco unit. Will report back tomorrow.

It is very easy to enable if you take your time and select correct module/sockets etc.
There is a screen shot of trailer module enabling in my gallery.
(there are a few options to navigate through)
If possible, I would test the electrics are working before taking it away from workshop.

Joe Fix it until it's broke !

Thanks. I'll certainly be doing that this time. If not, I'll be asking for my money back and will have to leave it for the main dealer to sort next week. Had a quick look at your images - is that Autologic? Doesn't look like the system my indy was using today.

Freel2.com Forum 1 – Indy 'Specialist' 0

Well the good news is that I now have fully working towing electrics with all the functions activated. I went back to the indy this morning armed with a number of forum posts (he must have loved me). Out comes the Autologic and he just tried doing what he did yesterday (enabling the electrics in the ECU) – no change (surprise).

So I point to the bits about needing to install software to the towing module itself. "Hmm, never had to do that" he says. At this point it becomes clear his Autologic training happened quite a while ago. He eventually found the trailer module programming section, but couldn't get it to work. By this time another mechanic had come out to join in the fun. They proceeded to check all the fuses in the boot, tut some more about DIY installers, but to no avail. Finally I persuaded mechanic #1 to go and call Autologic to ask about updating the software. In the mean time, mechanic #2 has another go. This time he was happy to be guided by me so I sent him back into the trailer module programming section and talked him through what I had read on the forum. Got him to click "yes" when asked if it's a new module (now realise mechanic #1 had clicked "no" hence why it didn't work), and "yes" again when asked if it was already fitted. Lo and behold, up pops a message requiring a download from Autologic. Off he trots for 20 mins, comes back, uploads the file to the towing module and blammo, the lights on the light board all now work!

So for those saying there is no software to install, in some cases there clearly is. I spoke with mechanic #2 whilst he was packing everything away and it was the first time he had ever done that process. He can only guess that LR are now sending the modules out with no software installed, hence the need to send the relevant file to the module using Autologic before it can communicate with the ECU.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and help. Hopefully this thread will be of use to others who find themselves in the same situation.

Yes interesting post 'alpacaman', obviously my MY13 needed none of the above but my previous MY11 only needed the options turning on by the Indy's Autologic and that was a Witter supply of towbar and dedicated loom. Why some modules are already loaded with the software and only require enabling and why some require a download is puzzling.
Thanks for the feedback Thumbs Up

I had exactly the same issue last week..

>I fitted the genuine electrics from Duckworths,
>Nothing worked
>I took it to a local Indie (Derbyshire Land Rover Spares (DLS)
>They 'programmed' it with Auto logic
>It came out still not working also now the parking sensors dont work either
>I had a very rude service manager say that ''You must have fitted it wrong''
>I took it to a 4x4 tow bar fitting specialist in Derby who also had Autologic - Same outcome..
>I took it to Hunters LR in Derby 20 minutes later all working, including park sensors etc etc got a free wash and vac included..

If you can I wouldnt bother trying to get an indie to do it, they sem fine for the thrule etc but for genuine it doesnt seem to work.. you will save alot of time just taking it to a dealer.. MY2011 Freelander 2 GS Santorini Black

The indy sorted it with Autologic, thanks to the help of this forum. They've learned something new today too. I'm betting that LR would have charged me a lot more than £20+VAT to do the same job.
