Auxilary belt tensioner would have no effect on the running, do you mean timing belt tensioner? |

Did the AA man check to see if the top end was moving when he attempted starting eg valves, cam turning |

He did f all to be honest. Tried for 5 minutes to charge and decided early on it needed to go in. He tried to jump and muttered something about a pressure going up and down but he never got any power to start the engine with that easy start spray. So thinks there might be a compression issue..tried again and whereas the power at least cranked it now just clicks on ignition... Which makes me think it might be alternator starter motor...any ideas ? |

To be fair to the AA man, if a belt is broken any damage will have been done after just ONE revolution of the crankshaft. You won't do one single bit of extra damage by cranking it over as the Pistons would have already bent any valves out of their way in that one revolution. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

The timing belt going at 90k would be very unusual, although you will find threads on here discussing changing at well below the recommended distance as a precautionary measure. If it turns out to be the timing belt I would contact Ryan from customer relations and would hope that JLR would contribute to the repair.

Steve your right about the damage if the belt has snapped but if the belts only slipped a tooth there is a risk of causing more damage by keep turning it over |

Cheers guys but just remembered had my timing belt and tensioner changed at Land Rover 2 years ago

My money is on alternator had similar fault(not Freelander) car would not fire then click click AA tried booster pack same again then did few checks pin pointed alternator, thing that caught me out the battery light did not show up on the dash. |

Sounding more like electrical if the timing belt was done, I presume you did water pump and tensioner pulley at the same time? |

Same rule applies. If it's slipped a tooth it's either hit or it ain't! I must say though, in over 40 years of being in the trade, I've never seen a car running that has 'slipped a tooth'. They did mate. Oops forgot to tell all that I had a funny sound before for a few weeks on shutdown..the famous throttle body I assume....so funnily enough garage have now diagnosed throttle body and glow plugs.....they say they have done compression checks and I do trust them but would throttle body failure cause complete late power loss and inability to be jumped? |

If it managed to start initially then it's unlikely that it's glow plugs and in my experience you will get one plug that fails which will give you rough starting but it will go and it wouldn't account for the car stopping. My money is on a throttle body that stuck closed (although you would expect to see a fault code). 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
