Hi guys,
Need some help from the electrical guru's out there. Have recently had a problem where my main beam lights stopped working, both in flash and main beam selection. Put it down to fuse.. As you do due to the fact the relay wasn't clicking but blue main beam indicator on dash was showing. I changed the fuse and all was well. Few days later the same happened again.. And so on. I went through 4 fuses before realising it only seems to blow the fuse when I use the main beam at the same time I have my driving/spot lights on. I have proved this as I have not used the spot lights for a couple of months and have not had a single blown fuse. Anyone had this issue or know why this may be the case?
I know it's not a problem to just leave the driving lights off but sometimes they can be useful and would like to solve it so I can use both. It has standard H7 bulbs and the car is a 2009 hse td4e

You need to check if the current when all the lights are on exceed or is very close to the fuses blow value, might be the place to start?
Do the spot lights run off their own relay or are they wired from the main beam wiring directly?
If so it might be better to connect the main beam to the spots via their own relay and fuse?

If they aren't currently, then the auxiliary lamps really need to be run off their own feed with a relay. Factory wiring won't be able to cope with the additional current of another lamp.  Freelander 2 2007 TD4 Manual HSE Tambora Flame

So youve not altered their wiring from Standard? No high wattage bulbs even? Just as factory still?
Could a wire be trapped or rubbing behind the bumper say thats causing a direct earth when that circuit is switched on causing the fuse to blow?

No nothing Landiroamer.. Had a bulb blow ages back and put some eBay bulbs in (ice white blue tinge h7), but they blew after a couple of weeks as they were cheap, so put normal H7 bulbs back in. Oem bulbs. No modification at all!
Just this annoying fuse thing. Will check the headlight wiring plugs the weekend to see if they are OK as that is the only wiring I've touched, taking out headlights to change bulbs. I've never touched or changed the fog lights...

Hmm odd, checking the headlamp plugs has got to be the first job then as thats the only thing youve ever touched, the maybe if you have one put a multimeter into the fog light supply and see if you can get the draw current when they switch on?
Does the fuse blow immediately every time the fogs go on?

What rating is the fuse and which fuse is that is blowing?

I am wondering if a bad earth somewhere is pulling current through the fog lights?

When you use high beam do the fog lights come on themselves or do you manually turn them on?

Sorry it's been a few days guys, been busy. I may have found the culprit though.. Took out the headlights the have a look at the plugs, which were ok but did find this.



It looks like it's rubbed against the body.

Just in case this is not the problem the answers to the previous questions are the fuse that blows is a 15amp and the main beam fuse. When I use the main beam on its own the main beam works.. No other lights come on by themselves. I turn on the fog lights and the next time I try to flash traffic out the main beam doesn't work.. Never actually noticed the exact point at where the fuse blows. But if this earthing wire doesn't solve the problem I will actually take notice of the exact blow point.

Thanks for the advice past master but what does that actually have to do with fixing a fuse blowing problem.. Do you know when I use them? No. I posted as I thought it was blowing the main beam fuse which now turns out I have got to the bottom of. Stick to the advice needed and stop trying to post score...
