Cross Bar Placement

Hi,

To anyone who uses the genuine cross bars for the roof rails - do you position the rear bar infront of, or behind the fixed cross bar strut. Not sure if it makes any difference...

As long as it is on the aluminium extruded section and there is 700 mm minimum distance between front & rear cross bars. Some people have noted it is better to place the front bar back a bit to reduce noise. Thus the rear bar would be placed further back to maintain at least 700 mm spacing (centre to centre).

If you are carrying a long load the front one would be better being more forward. On the other hand if you have a roof box placing them both further back would be better to reduce noise and for streamlining air flow.

Mine are on there simply for pure decoration & to hang onto while cleaning the roof once a year! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Thanks for that. I'm using a box which isn't too long so have placed the rear bar just infront of the cross bar - that gives plenty of room to adjust the front bar if something longer is used, and keeps things as central to the wheel base as possible.

Stick everything as far back as you can, from my experience much quieter and no vibrating roof box. Also this allows you to stand on the rear wheel to fill the roof box instead of standing on the rear seats.

Scotland

I regularly carry kayaks on my roof so have the rear crossbar just behind the brace bar, with the front crossbar slightly in front of the 'B' pillar.

Also, when strapping down, I strap down to the brace bar on the rear and the crossbar on the front - just gives added peace of mind [in case of crossbar failure] FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-
