I wasn't slipstreaming at all to be fair. The bulk of the motorway section is on Average speed cameras at 50mph, so that probably helped a lot.

I generally manage 42 to 44mpg with relative ease which Im quite pleased with considering its a big heavy vehicle, as my 2012 MINI Cooper S doesnt do 38mpg even. |

I used to get an average of 34mpg on my 2008 TD4 pretty much all the time. I could get it to peak at 40/41 if I reset the OBC on the motorway

Finally managed to get a short trip done, best part of 400km, 1/3 Sydney, very slow including 20 minutes crawling in the M5 tunnel due to an accident, glad the Freelander has a proper auto & not a DSG, or manual for that matter! The Freelander kept out the carcinogenic air very well. Even more hilly terrain down south. Average speed 56 km/h. 10.0L/100km or 28.2 mpg, with roof racks and AC on all the time.

Hi all I'm not that impressed with the MPG I've been getting on my 13 plate GS. Only had it a few weeks and it's returning approx 35 mpg. My old 07 SE could do 34! Is it just me or...?

MY 2011, I only got it a couple of weeks ago, just put more fuel in this morning, that did 480 miles on a tank, it was ~£62 to fill, at £1.08p per L. so i think that works out to 35.8MPG..

Why do you expect it to be any different to your old one? It's basically the same car with the same engine, no? |

On a run to work, early hours on the M60 my old MY57 SE TD4 manual could get 44mpg, same run MY13 HSE SD4 auto I'm lucky if it hits 38mpg. Around town driving 26-30mpg the TD4 never dropped below 30mpg. But I think the on-board computer calculate differently from the older type, because I'm not using anymore fuel over the week. You don't buy a Freelander for economy, if you did it was a mistake, for what it is it is reasonable, you can thrash it about and achieve the low 20's I would imagine that going heavily off road you could get under 20mpg. you could drive nice and gently, never exceed 1800rpm and possibly get the low 40's.

My computer was saying 20.9 mpg when I looked tonight! That's why I normally leave the display off. I tend to sit in traffic most nights, crawling the 5 miles home. That's a 60 plate TD4 HSE Auto. |

You can't rely on the computer. it's only approximate. After all, the speedometer is not accurate, so all mileage calculations will be out to some extent. I find my SD4 varies, but rarely tops an indicated 35 mpg. Running around town with a cold engine it's low 20s. Oddly, I find that "thrashing it" doesn't really affect the mpg. As Alex has pointed out in the past, the engine is only efficient when it's fully warmed up and the turbo is on full boost. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
