TD4 vs SD4

Having owned 2 TD4 150bhp FL2 (07 and 08 plate manuals), which do people think is the better engine to have.

Taking into account all the 'quirks' both positive and negative for both engines (but discounting DMF/rear diff kind of problems and other non engine related issues)

not worried about post 2013 models with the revised interior as I don't think there were any changes underneath the bonnet.

TD4 for me, whilst the SD4 does feel a little quicker when pushed hard, the trade off in fuel consumption IMHO is not worth it

and yet you have an SD4 Auto which would give the worst MPG out them all Laughing

I found my 2nd TD4 with a dose of millers additive to the tank was more than capable, although under 1800rpm there was nothing under the go pedal.

SD every time. Auto is excellent. You can select command shift and play with gearchanges all day if you wish.
Seriously: I regularly get 44mpg on 400 miles roung trip from Ayrshire to Aberdeen areas, cruise at 75 (true 72-73)
I recently did 140 miles of rally route as safety car running 10-15 minutes ahead of event of which approx 70 miles was on forest roads using GGS programe. 32 MPG.
Normal average 38-41 mpg.
If I had driven many new 1.4 or 1.6 petrol cars on any above i am sure consumption would have been much the same or worse.
Auto Express findings on road tests always quote MPG on test which usually bears no resemblance to Government Combined figures. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

naturally, you are a mud plugger, and sd4 autos are very good off road - considering they have no low range

I have the SD4 Auto and think its great - yes the MPG is quite bad , ok its very bad ..... but i am willing to pretend that isn't an issue as i really enjoy the engine.

I'm with Lightwater-Si4 for me I hate diesels! Why did Land Rover never offer a sensible petrol option to FL2 buyers in the uk??

I drove a FFRR with the 4.4 TDV8 on a LR experience day and its an unbelievable engine, very very quick on road and effortless off road. Thumbs Up

United Kingdom 2015 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Orkney Grey

Recently upgraded to a SD4 auto from a TD4 manual - I find the SD4 quieter, more powerful, surprisingly better fuel economy and more relaxing. I don't think I will ever go "manual" again MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.
