United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Barolo Black
Autobox not finding 1st?

Hello,

I've just bought a Freelander 2, SD4 HSE with an autobox, and have a question.
I was stuck in slow moving traffic for 30 mins, and kept the car in Drive, with my foot on the foot brake, edging forward every few minutes. When the traffic cleared and it was time to pull away, the car started to move VERY slowly, before enough momentum was built up and she got away. This happened again, when I was pulling away from the lights, a few minutes later. At the next set of lights, I put the car in Park, then was able to pull away normally when I re-selected Drive.
It's only happened the once, as I put the car in Neutral when I'm gonna be stationary for more than a few seconds.

Any of you good folks got an idea as to what may have caused this?

ps; this is the first automatic I have owned, so apologies in advance if I'M the cause of this!

Cheers,

Ian.

The auto start off in 2nd gear, it's normal as far as I'm aware. You can put it in manual and drop it down into first gear. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

Thanks for your reply Hinchy. Should it not put itself into 1st when stationary if it's in auto mode, before I pull away?

I far as I am aware this autobox always starts off in 2nd and 1st gear is for off-roading which you have to use it manually. If you do a forum search you'll get more information. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

Nope, sorry, the autobox always starts in 1st, and starts in second only when you put it there through command shift.

I've been told (by a non-Land Rover owner), that it may need the gearbox oil topping up?

The topping, if needed, is a bad sign.
Although it has drain and fill screws, in a way, the box is sealed and doesn't need topping.

Although you have a different cluster than mine, your autobox is the same as mine, and on my MY2009, I've changed the cluster's firmware in order to show the gears too. And you can see that the box always starts on 1st.

Back on the first message: when you pulled away, how hard did you pressed the throttle? Because if you push it quickly you can experience such lags...

It wasn't too hard. "Normal" I'd say. Although I had a heavy foot with my hot hatches, I've somewhat modified my driving style with the switch to a 4X4.

It hasn't done it since I started to put it in neutral when stationary for more than a few seconds.

Hi Ash3y, sounds like a problem I have/had. Only happened after a period of stop/start driving usually on a Friday as I do a fair bit of town center driving then. Here's my post:
http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic23624.html

I can confirm that the box at least thinks its in 1st as I've managed to used command shift several times now and it still wont pull away and very slow to build up the revs. No solution so far and not had the problem the last month or so as I've not been using it as much around town.
