Quite a noise about the wider impact of generalised massaging of emissions numbers. Other manufs to be investigated in US. Here in UK, talk of a wholesale scrappage of diesel cars. Where will it end? What will it do to the resale value of our (diesel, natch) Freelies?

Confused

Given that this is software driven then I assume that the "fix" will be to remap the ECUs in all cars affected to take out the dodgy software elements. Presumably this will reduce both performance and mpg figures.
According to the Financial Times this morning the software detected that the steering wheel was in a central position without moving plus the car ran at a preset constant speed and at a certain temperature and air pressure. However it got me thinking about those of us who have had a remap and whether this would mean that this could eventually become illegal unless the remapping has been approved for emissions purposes.

Given that a lot of engine management stuff is made by Bosch I would expect that a lot of manufacturers are asking questions internally about this - and does it extend to petrol engines? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Certainly makes you wonder given that the reduced emissions/hesitation came in with the 2011 model and the inability of LR to find a fix. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

sadly modern diesel engines cant run on chip fat/bio diesel as they are designed not to. Keeps us at the fuel pumps paying tax rather than loitering behind the local chippy............

My earlier comment was a little tongue in cheek, however, after a run down the motorway, cruise control at 60, so around 56 true speed, the revs are right at the point where people, and I myself only a couple times, have experienced this hesitation anomaly ... its makes you wonder?

Which could scupper the VW plans to enter F1 and put an end to the Audi World Endurance Racing Team.

They are talking about doing a recall but I wonder how many owners would take that up if they know their performance \ mpg is going to get mullered.

If your passes an MOT without doing anything i suppose youd leave it as is, but now everyone knows they will probably put stricter values the car has to pass so i bet youd have to have it done.
Of course you could fit your own chip you could switch on/off for testing then they might not find out?

There is a suggestion that it may affect road tax - if the emission figures are recalculated the tax band may change. Sad Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Didnt see many folk in the local VW showroom this morning. Neutral

Yes they could indeed put your VW in the maximum tax bracket, as its classed now as emissions unknown??
