... if you can afford a new VW, you ain't a poor motorist Rolling Eyes

The buyers should not be the ones to suffer though, I expect the government will go for some sort of payment probably disguised as an EU rebate, which ever way, we wont see any of it.

I've always felt that the DoJ, EPA and their European counterparts have used these kinds of large-scale investigations as a way of defecit reduction through the back door. As Taz rightly points out, huge fines get levied on companies that are found guilty but the money just disappears into Government coffers. Specifically, the DoJ have been very sucessful at litigating and fining non-US companies who are, in effect, subsidising the US Government and the US Tax Payer.

I say well done VW , emissions requirements are getting out of control, technologies arnt ready yet to produce reliable ad-blue egr dpf systems

if car manufactures have to cheat to pass govt standards then the whole set up is wrong,

burning fossil fuels causes pollutants full stop, engines are now throttled forced to consume there own gases , dpf filters need special motor way thrashes to clean them and the a whole industries is set up producing and dispensing adblue. At work

Not only in the US, quote from the BBC News website.

Gets worse by the day.

Germany's transport minister says Volkswagen has admitted using the same fake emissions test in [b]Europe
as it used to falsify results in the US.

Alexander Dobrindt said it was not known how many of the 11 million vehicles affected were in Europe.

He also said other manufacturers' vehicles would be checked.

The scandal began unfolding on Friday when the German car giant said it had used software in the US to provide false emission test results.

Mr Dobrindt said he had been told vehicles with 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesel engines are "affected by the manipulations that are being talked about".

The company's Jetta, Beetle, Golf and Audi A3 models in the US from 2009 to 2015, and the Passat from 2014-15, were fitted with the devices which produced doctored results. However, diesel cars are far more popular in Europe than in the US.

Tip of an iceberg

The VW Emissions scandal is just the tip of the iceberg regarding vehicle emissions !

In London we have the LEZ, supposed to be for LEZ trucks, running astra or emminox low emissions systems and SCR systems .
Trucks like the later VW engines run the add blue systems which is a synthetic urea.
The add blue is fed into the exhaust via a dosing control unit and injector and the mix reduces the Nitrogen oxides by up to 95%

The important issue is that with trucks they have a 400 day emissions fault recorder so should the vehicles emissions exceed a certain level ( normally due to the add blue failing or running out ) the faults is recorded in the dash where it stays for 400 days as a record.

This costs the trucking industry a fortune in add Blue and higher fuel consumption to comply with the LEZ.

These Euro 5/6 compliant vehicles that are allowed to enter the LEZ are great if the system hasn't been tampered with BUT trucking companies are fitting Add blue emulators !!!!!!!!! a simulator that fools the truck engine management into thinking the add blue is working when in reality its not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hence much higher nitrogen oxides ! not an emission that's tested on the truck test !

The EGR valves are often bypassed on cars & trucks often with emulators once again to enhance performance and drive-ability.
EGR valves are fitted to reduce combustion temperatures . Above certain temperatures once again the valve opens to divert an inert gas into the inlet manifold to reduce combustion to reduce temperature and lower these harmful N0x gases.

DPF's are fitted to diesels to remove harmful soot which cause breathing difficulties.
If you google DPF removal you may be surprised to find out how many business offer a DPF removal service ! this applies to diesel cars and trucks

The shocking & worrying part is how many truck companies are bypassing these systems ! even fleets of 150 trucks + all running daily into London with add blue bypassed and evading tax for emissions and effecting peoples health !

ECU remapping is another angle that should be tested and tax band raised

The problem is partly caused by ineffective fines that are often a fraction of what is gained .

I suspect that VW have just increased the add blue dosage to reduce the emissions and it will be interesting to see what comes out in the wash !
Please investigate the trucking industry. These add blue emulators mostly come from Poland and cost about £35.00 a vehicle. Shocking Jaguar x-type sport gone

Of course none of this pollutant stuff is good for anyone, but when China produces more pollutants in one second than the UK produces in one year it makes it all seem rather insignificant here, what we do will hardly make any difference at all to the world.
Either everyone complies and does it properly or no one bothers at all I say.

We will have to run on bio fuel instead of diesel then wont we??
Loads of used curry oil available, especially in the Midlands.

Shouldnt toyota be prosecuted for their extravagant mpg figures on hybrid vehicles, its not much different, and 'zero' emission electric vehicles, when is that pretence going to stop?

All this emission control to suit city living, fair point there maybe but a tractor with DPF filters and ad-blue? !!!!

Our forklift truck has a DPF and sometimes needs a stationary filter clean, were it sits in the yard reving itself for 10 minutes or so At work
