Freelander 2 i6 Petrol Problems

Having major issues with my Freelander 2 i6 over the last month. Been in to the main dealership due to the amount of oil it is getting through, the car alarm going off and also starting issues when the weather is above 23 deg (rare in Scotland, I know, but this has been ongoing for 3 years!).

After receiving a huge bill for a software upgrade to sort the starting issues out, a new door latch to stop the alarm going off and saying that there is a slight sweat around the dip-stick (but nothing to worry about) - these problems have all started again. The car has gone through a litre of oil in the last 4 weeks, although there are no patches on the ground and no smoke coming from the exhaust system. The alarm has started going off (sometimes saying the bonnet is open ..) and this morning, the car was completed dead, just showing a HDC Transmission error.

Needless to say, once the rescue service had been out and manged to get it started, it was straight back to the main dealer. Just hoping that somebody else has experienced some of these issues, as I have no confidence in the main dealer, apart from the fact that they are probably going to ask for lots of money to try and sort this out!

Ok, just some suggestions and I really encourage you to read threads on here from these suggestions that may
Help before others come along.

Bonnet catch has a sensor on it and if faulty will set off the alarm or trigger bonnet open! There is two so one only has the sensor on it.

Oil, start with oil to water cooler as these can fail. I assuming your engine is in good condition.

Early Freelander 2's suffered with battery earth strap failures leading to all sorts of electrical issues/warnings.

Try searching on these and you should give you a head start whilst others come along Thumbs Up MY15

Ditto.
A litre of oil in 4 weeks must be going somewhere, can you see any oil when you look in the engine bay? Are you able to take the bottom engine shield off and take a look?

I think your electrical issues could be either a breakdown of the earth strap as Stuart said or you may need a new battery. Keep us informed of progress.

Not that it will help you much, but I had an Astra that went through a litre of oil every 300 miles...

Didn't leak out, emissions were low enough to single handedly save the world.

Never did find out what was happening to it

Oh no! Hoping that this is resolved. The garage can't look at my car until Friday, but I will let you all know the outcome.

I feel your pain!

Can't help with the oil use issue I'm afraid, and it sounds like you might have an answer for your alarm problem too. I have had my i6 for about 18 months now and has suffered on-and-off with starting issues for nearly all that time.
I don't want to depress you - but Main Dealers have NO IDEA about how to fix these issues. there are only about 250 i6's registered in the UK and so the Dealers just don't see them. You need to try and find an independent specialist who will take the time to find out about all the issues. There is definately a software update designed to clear the hot starting issue. I have just had ALL the Powertrain modules updated on my car for £75 at an Independent in West Sussex.

I'll let you know how I get on

(I also fitted an extra battery earth strap and a new battery - didn't make any diifference at all !)

Again I encourage you guys to search through the forum - if earth strap not successful then next would be checking the main wiring plugs in the junction box located in the passenger foot well. Aparently they can be dislodged from passenger kicking the
Box and causing gremlins!!!!
Hot starting issues would be checking both Cam and Crankshaft location sensors! MY15

Just had an update from the garage ......
They have refitted the sensor to the bonnet, so hopefully that will sort out the alarm problem. They cannot find any issues in relation to the oil ??? I've asked them to revisit this to check some of your suggestions - where is it going??
Incredibly, they have said that my car started without any problem today. I've just picked myself up off the floor - how can it be completely dead yesterday to the extent that I couldnt even remove the key, to being absolutely fine today? Even when I dropped it at the garage, I couldnt even open the electric window to find out where they wanted it parked! The recovery guy mentioned the voltage between the battery & alternator not being enough, but the dealership says there is not a problem.
They are going to road test tonight and see how it starts tomorrow, to try and give me peace of mind. Time to find an independant garage, I think!!

Mine is in the shop are we speak for leaking oil; and it is coming from the connection between the transmission and the vacuum pump.
they tighten it up 6 months ago, it stop leaking for a while, and now the pump is juiced.

I learned very quickly from another helpful forum member about the starting problem, fixed immediatelyy by the £50 hot start software update
Fitted extra starter earth strap, and it ran perfectly for 12mths
Just had a new starter motor fitted as the solenoid on the last one was geeking weaker and eventually packed in
Now runs better than new, amazing what a new starter and a fully charged battery can do!
If you need info re the software update ring Bury landrover and they will know what you need. Both me and the chap who steered me had the update done here - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

Thank you all so much for your responses, they have been very helpful (so glad I found this Forum).

The alarm hasn't gone off, so hope that it's ok now. Going to get an extra earth strap fitted as per your recommendations (the garage actually said this may help). The computer said that the total non start was down to a major earthing problem. I will check what software update they did re. the hot start, although I had to involve the Tech team at Landrover H.Q, as the local dealership didn't have a clue. I will then contact Bury to make sure it's the same one - thanks for that.

With regard to the oil usage, there is absolutely no evidence of a leak anywhere although I will get the independent garage to check the connection between the transmission and vacuum pump as suggested. The technician did suggest that it may be a piston problem, but was not sure and did admit that it would be expensive for them to start stripping the engine to chase the leak. A friend suggested is it Red-ex?? The name rings a bell - using it in a car some 15 years ago - can you use this in modern engines, as willing to try anything!

re the oil level.
firstly are you sure the car is using or losing oil?

Reason I ask is the first time I serviced mine (3.2) I filled the oil with the correct amount but it showed low on the stick after dipping it several times
I put another litre in and the level on the stick was perfect. A little drive later and re dipped and it was too full!
Sucked a litre out and it was then bob on. This was the 1st service and since then I dip the stick several times to get the reading
Car was I thought level, upon my oil change, but my driveway has a very faint slope. when stick dipped on a flat car park and regularly checked it hasnt moved for 8000 miles!!
Just goes to show a slightly un-level car has a big diffence in readings on these straight 6 volvo engines for fluid reading

so.........if its not dripping/leaking it must be burning it

try the following as a basic test,,hold the revs at 3k for 1 minute, foot off then straight back on and boot the accelerator once or twice and watch to see if you get a puff of blue smoke at the tailpipes

Also on cold start up after a previous decent run, get someone to start the car and check the tailpipes, blue smoke on either test indicates wear and burning oilh has made its way into the cyllider combustion chamber past your piston rings whic, poss piston or head wear.
This would be unusual on these tried and tested engines unless it has done big miles, are you 100% the miles are genuine to the car, as its easy to clock them! - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

Hi, had the car from new and just clocked up 87K - used to do quite high mileage, but only doing maybe 6K a year now.

I will try the tests over the weekend and let you know how it goes, thanks very much!
