Oil leak to top front of engine pipework

As in the images (close-up image is up-side-down), can someone suggest what is leaking oil?

The oil is present on a downpipe between the radiator and the engine and finds its way onto the sump guard. I can't see the source of the leak because I'd have top remove other components first. Is it a hose clip or a gasket that has failed?

Car is an 08-plate with 92k miles. Has had an oil leak from when we bought it at 40k miles, but only really noticeable recently. We've not noticed any problems with the engine.

Looks like the air inlet pipe from the throttle body. Obvious thing to do is remove the top cover and see if the pipe is split or the jubilee clips need replacing (or just tightening). Removal of the top cover is easy, just undo the nuts and lift off but the rear one near the battery is a bit fiddly and you might lose the nut down the back of the engine in the process. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I've had this recently too and ad210358 sent me some details via PM...

As it was PM I wont share here but you could send him a message.

In any case I sprayed a load of engine cleaner on and the problem has not been seen since making me think it was the garage spilling when it was serviced....

From where I THINK that is (not going outside to look at mine as it's currently Censored down with rain!) I reckon that's most likely to be spillage from oil filler. Have you had a service or anything recently? 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

Oil leak is close to the dipstick. Last service was in September. I'll lift off the plastic engine cover as soon as I have access to the car again.

Thanks for the advice ao far.

Don't overtighten the nuts when you put the cover back on! Easy to strip threads. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

My Freelander leaked engine oil from the same place that the intercooler pipe seams to spew oil out if the clamp and connection isn't tight enough. I borrowed my Mates ramp to find a oil leak as I noticed drips of oil on my drive. When I removed the under tray everything was coated in oil that had splashed out. I have also noticed a slight increase in Power.

Okay. I removed the engine cover and spent some time cleaning the oil off. As per suggestion from above, yes it does seem that the jubilee clip is not tight enough at the top of the hose where it joints onto the metal body.

The close-up of the underside of the throttle body (?) is where the screw for the jubilee clip sits, which I haven't worked out how to get to - so can't tighten it. I couldn't inspect around the back of the pipe so can't even say whether it's split or not.

The second picture shows the jubilee clip at the bottom the short piece of pipe - that doesn't appear to be leaking.

I shall monitor the hose from time to time and see how it goes.

hi RBaron,

I've had the same on my freely, mine was caused by the pipe being split.

Have a look here, shows how bad the split was.

http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic20262-15.html

I have since replaced all the turbo/intercooler hoses on mine after i found that 2 more hoses were also split.

Good luck! Thumbs Up

Interesting....

I am getting a turbo under boost issue assumed split pipe

When looking I also found this pipe to be covered in oil

Hard to get to but I am now convinced it's all connected.

There is also a jubilee clip half way down the pipe that is not complete - might have snapped and just left half of it stuck on the pipe.
