Smoke from Engine bay again

Hi all

Recently I have noticed again smoke from my engine bay, when I drive with no heater fan or aircon on I don't seem to notice anything, if I put the fan only on and I drive say 4 miles then stop and open the bonnet I notice smoke coming up from the back left side of the engine, if I put the aircon on and drive the same 4 miles it will be noticeable coming out of the bonnet, then once the bonnet is opened the smoke will be coming from the back left side of the engine but a fair bit more of it Rolling Eyes

The air con clutch and compressor got changed this time last year after I got the freelander as it was shot. Have checked the drain pipe ( only from inside, but it seemed fine, but I have not noticed any water dripping when I have used the aircon, but it has been coming out cold with no water or wet carpets inside )

No bearings on the aux belt sound bad, or seem to get to hot. Its hard to tell where its coming from tbh and im wondering if when the aircon is turned on the 2nd fan is blowing the smoke up more or if the drag from it being on is making the smoke.

Is there anywhere I should start to look and try one step at a time?

I have done all tests with the air on recirculate so it does not suck the smoke into the cab, it does not seem like water mist but seems kind of a very light burning smell but that might just be with the heat of the motor

Cheers

Mine was a leaking / defective injector that I suspect the dealer just codged up under warranty. It went again 18 months later and was fixed (at a tidy sum thank you and please call again) at a local indie.

It was evident once the engine cover was removed but it is now fume free again.

not coming from the injectors, the last 2 days have been cooler and I have not had any smoke per say, so im at a loss at the moment and still not found the problem.

Today on the way home I had the aircon on full and recirculate and then left the freelander running when I got home still with the aircon on full, so say it was on full blast for an hour, yet nothing dripping from the bottom, I tried the other day to check the pipe and it seemed clear but maybe I do have a block in the drain outlet pipe? Does anyone know where it exits the floor? Had a look under her but cant see its exit point.

Cheers

I wonder if your aircon is permanently on and what you re seeing is condensation arising from the piping. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Mine was leaking exhaust gases from a failed seal in the body of the turbo - could yours be that or an insecure turbo pipe? 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

Not sure how you mean always on? But I did 3 tests today, went for the same run 3 times.

First was with nothing on = no smoke

Second with aircon on and sucking in air from outside = no smoke

Third with aircon on recirculate = no smoke Laughing

upon the Third time how ever when I stopped in the layby I did see a few drops come out of the drain pipe area. Then I noticed that the larger of the metal aircon pipes had condensation all over it and it was very lightly dripping, so im wondering if that is the problem? OR is this a normal pipe to have condensation on?

It seemed to have condensation on all of that larger pipe, but inside there wasnt any conensation on the pipe in the footwell area, bone dry in there.

Any help would be greatful Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Cheers Thumbs Up

The only other thing I could see is that the air intake where it always leaks oil from on every freelander has also done so on mine and has leaked down and gone onto the turbo, maybe that could be the course, but I did not see any smoke from this area either today, and it was 20oc with maybe 30 miles of driving. Will keep an eye on it and hopefully one day when its chucking smoke out of the bonnet I can stop and find the problem Evil or Very Mad

By always on, I mean that the clutch for compressor is always made, either because the there is a fault and the clutch circuit and is always live, or the clutch is jammed on mechanically. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Thanks Dartman, the clutch is working as should though Thumbs Up This time last year it had a new clutch and compressor fitted and seems to be working fine still.

Will just wait and see if/when it happens again and will try and stop to see whats going on, like said every time its happened I have not been able to stop or had the time to see whats going on plus will have to keep some tools in the boot

Cheers again

Well the other evening cleaned all the oil that had leaked from the air intake( which had dripped down the back of the engine and onto turbo ) , with engine oil cleaner and yesterday went on a 10 mile drive and yet again smoke

Was parked nose down hill in the car park and the smoke was coming up the back middle of the engine ( white grey looking smoke )

Edit: this is the best video that I have seen that looks sort of like mine, bar its a bmw lol  Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

Hi. That's pretty much what mine was like when the turbo failed and leaked exhaust gases. Could be either you've got a similar problem, or loose pipes from turbo. Does it smell like exhaust?
I'd get it checked out as I had enough coming into the cabin that I got a mild headache when driving before it was bad enough to see the smoke - not a great thing to be breathing and the cabin air intake is pretty near. 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

could be a diesel over-spill pipe loose or leaking.

Today again 10 plus mile drive = no smoke Neutral same temp as the other day, only difference is I did not have the air con on so its gota be something to do with that. This things worse than a women Laughing

Will try again tomorrow to get it to smoke and have another good look at it when it is, could understand it to be a turbo problem if it smoked everytime but it does not seem to Confused
