Hey Soul Fan - your a star and I really appreciate the reply, it is great to see that someone else has a solution tried and tested.

I have been pretty busy and haven't taken the time to get it sorted, and not having a garage doesn't help in this weather. Also the fact that it seems to come and go drives me mad, but I had better bite the bullet and get it sorted, Easter is a week off for me, so most likely do it then.

Need to identify and source the splined tool, I have plenty of torx and tools etc.

Really appreciate the heads up and good info on what to expect Cheers Thumbs Up

Hi fella , glad to help . You have my sympathy, I have to work outside too.

Found the tool on the bay ,quite a few suppliers but these guys had them down as "Audi/VW alternator Free Wheel clutch pulley removal tool
33 spline " £8
There are a few videos on YouTube which help with the actual pulley removal, just to show method etc.

Eventually got a chance to get this sorted, almost got it done with the alternator in too, just couldn't get enough force to crack the pulley bolt while it was in the car.

While I was at it I replaced the fuel filter, well why not I had to remove the mounting brackets as well, boy oh boy what a job getting the damn thing started again.

I thought the pump in the tank was a primer, after a bit of reading it looks like it may be a "balance" pump. So after a lot of hair pulling and swear words, I used a syringe to refill the filter and some fuel into one of the lines. Then it started.

Thanks again all for your help - back to a quiet engine again Thumbs Up

We tried our best, cut a torx so we could fit the ratchet, spanner in an extension tube. Nah.... ended up with a uri geller spanner, well bent and twisted.

I drove into a multi story carpark tonight, normally it echos like crazy sounding like a bucket of bolts ... whisper quiet now Cool

Wonder if theres another way to prime the fuel filter, syringe and tube just doesn't seem right on a car of this quality.

Tried that, just didn't want to shift any diesel at all, had to fill filter and pipe before it would go. Tries that many times I thought I was going to need jump leads lol

There was a unscrewable cap on it, I thought it was the filler until I noticed the hole in the bottom sp it was for drainingLOL

I know this post is a year old but I have exactly the same noise as in the he video & same symptoms, noisy under electrical load , had a new belt tensioner & belt fitted , aircon has been degassed , noise is definitely worse and when a/c compressor clutch kicks in , blitzer, did you sort your noise out by changing alternator pulley or was it something else ?

Just the alternator pulley solved it for me if I remember correctly, it was a horlicks as I had to take the alternator out, but once done it went silent again

I'm suspecting the clutch pulley has gone on my alternator...car has done 93k miles,so may chamge complete alternator.
Can any one suggest where to get the clutch pulley itself...if the alternator itself seems OK.
