Glad it's all under way. Mine was booked for 3 days but was in the body shop for a week. Not really an issue as the dealer gave me a 14 plate XS Smile

I would imagine if everyone went and checked their tailgates it would be a much bigger issue for LR!

Hope they can get it done in the 3 days, though they will also be lending me something.

You're right, I reckon it'll certainly affect most MY11 ones, maybe more. 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

Quick update. All fixed under warranty by dealer which included a replacement handle. The new one stands off the painted panel so there's no contact to rub the paint away now; I don't know if something has been inserted behind or whether it's a redesigned handle. I'd assume a redesign of the handle given that it was a replacement for an undamaged one (only damage was to paintwork on tailgate). 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

Update.....6 months after repair the paint has been rubbed off again! Back to dealer this morning but have to go in during the week when they can get someone from their sub-contracted body shop to assess it. Hope this isn't going to be a twice a year job forever! 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

Mine did the same...rust re-appeared less than 1 year after repair.
Had it booked in again but then decided to trade it it for a Metropolis Smile

What a farce this harse piece accessory has proved. Instead of improving component quality LR allowed some berk in the Bling department to stick this on the tailgate without engineering it properly. Poor show really.

I have had two, 110,000 miles between them and both fine, not a mark, as have countless thousands of others, the paint issue affects a small number of vehicles.
I believe, there is some sort of spacer behind the finisher allowing it to stand off from the tailgate, I can slide a business card behind mine.

Hi. There appears to be a gap on mine too, but it clearly flexes either under use or from vibration/air flow in motion and contacts the paint. Mine's only done 23000 miles with first repair done at 19000! They're clearly either not all the same or not fitted the same!? 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

The 'handle' for want of a better word. The far ends seem to move/flex and damage the paint on some cars/installations - certainly on mine! 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

How do you close the tailgate, I never use the outer 'chrome piece' I always use the inner handle and let the tailgate drop shut, it's obviously a handle so not saying that it is wrong to use it in this way, perhaps pushing down on it is causing the flex and thus the wear to the paint.

It's an interesting question! And yes, it IS a handle, but since the previous problem and fix I've consciously been avoiding using it very much in the way you suggest...far less than before and yet it's still had the problem recur - that's what makes me wonder if the problem is more from vibration or air pressure flexing it? 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

Vibration, possible,

air pressure, I doubt it, it's not an aerodynamic part and the speeds that rear spoilers etc start to flex is quite high.

I'm trying to find an image, they have been moved and links broken, I am sure someone mentioned a spacer too.

True about air pressure flexing spoilers etc.....was thinking more of turbulent flow at the rear (and it will be) possibly inducing small movements of the same sort of size as vibrations from mechanical inputs. 2011 SD4 HSE Auto
