Vibration in 6th (Manual)

I am getting a vibration through the gear lever and a general "rumble" when below about 2000 rev/min in 6th.

I can drive at the same road speeds and engine speeds (and lower) in other gears without this happening but not in 6th.

Before I approach the dealer, I wanted to know:

Has anybody else had this?
What was it?
How was it fixed?

Otherwise loving my Freelander after 3 Discoverys.

Thanks for any info

Chris

When I picked up mine from the Dealer I was told that 6th gear was effectively an overdrive and that it was probably best to use it above 60 mph. Over the last year I've used it happily at speeds over 50 mph but at anything much below that I get all the indications that I'm in the wrong gear which may be what you're experiencing.

there is nothing wrong with your engine or transmission - it's just the engine complaining about being in 6th gear at too low revs.

The rumbling & vibration is caused by the engine nealy stalling, exactly like if you start on an incline without enough revs.

It's quite rare, with normal driving, that I can get it in 6th gear - only managed it on long motorway journeys to the alps for example.

So - don't worry ! Thumbs Up

Strange this.....

I can quite happily cruise along in 6th gear on the flat at 40mph without any vibration at all. Ok you won't get fast acceleration from it but it makes the fuel economy look good Very Happy

I would think a trip to the dealer is in order.

I'm with Dave on this I routinely drive in 40limits in 6th gear and no feet on the pedals and I have never had any rumbling Thumbs Up Using 6th at speeds of over 60 mph only will give poor fuel consumption figures. Sad

As I said I tend to use mine over 50 mph and over the last 2000 miles I'm averaging 36.4 mpg which I think is pretty good. I agree 6th gear can be used at 40 mph but to my mind the engine is not happy hence my previous comment.

I only use 6th over 50mph or I get rumbling/vibration. Thumbs Up

I have found using 6th at lower speeds decreases economy because the engine is working harder and I would be concerned about damage over time.

I have to say that mine is perfectly happy at 1000 to 1500 rpm and my aveage fuel consumption is 42 mpg I have now got 35,000 miles on the car and have no rumbling at all. Diesels are quite happy at low revs it's what they are designed to do

Thanks everyone. I have chatted to the workshop manager at my dealer and he says this is not a "known problem", whcih you have kindly confirmed (dealers aren't always open about concerns like this).

I am booked in to demonstrate my concern next Friday and we'll go from there. I post an update.

Avatar of arrival day added to my signature today!

Cheers

this is strange Rolling Eyes

There is absolutely no way mine will drive in 6th gear at 1000 revs.

As you say, let's see what the dealer says when he road tests it...............

The handbook suggests driving between 2000 & 3000 RPM Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

The only thing is that when you get back to the 200 rpm and 110 Km/hour you fell like the FL2 is not moving anymore. FREELANDER 2 TD4 SE (XS UK) IZMIR BLUE SIDE STEPS COLD PACK BI-XENON TINTED WINDOWS - AND PROUD OF HER
