I am getting a vibration through the gear lever and a general "rumble" when below about 2000 rev/min in 6th.

When I picked up mine from the Dealer I was told that 6th gear was effectively an overdrive and that it was probably best to use it above 60 mph. Over the last year I've used it happily at speeds over 50 mph but at anything much below that I get all the indications that I'm in the wrong gear which may be what you're experiencing. |

there is nothing wrong with your engine or transmission - it's just the engine complaining about being in 6th gear at too low revs.

I'm with Dave on this I routinely drive in 40limits in 6th gear and no feet on the pedals and I have never had any rumbling Using 6th at speeds of over 60 mph only will give poor fuel consumption figures. |

As I said I tend to use mine over 50 mph and over the last 2000 miles I'm averaging 36.4 mpg which I think is pretty good. I agree 6th gear can be used at 40 mph but to my mind the engine is not happy hence my previous comment. |

I only use 6th over 50mph or I get rumbling/vibration.

I have to say that mine is perfectly happy at 1000 to 1500 rpm and my aveage fuel consumption is 42 mpg I have now got 35,000 miles on the car and have no rumbling at all. Diesels are quite happy at low revs it's what they are designed to do |

Thanks everyone. I have chatted to the workshop manager at my dealer and he says this is not a "known problem", whcih you have kindly confirmed (dealers aren't always open about concerns like this).
