Could be glow plugs then, worth getting them checked out.

Video still not working, Taz.

How long does it crank when starting with the jump from the FL1? The fact that it won't start by itself but starts when jumped might point to the battery or its state of charge. Of course, any battery or charging issues will be greatly magnified by faulty glowplugs, so they're still in the frame.

I recall reading some time ago that certain cars (may have been an Audi) used to turn on the glow plugs for a short while as soon as you unlocked the car and that most diesels use the glow plugs at all times at start up and that they stay on for a minute or two after start up. I doubt if it is the case with modern high pressure common rail systems but can anyone throw any light on glow plug technology?

Ay EY correctly pointed out, it's nothing to do with the ambient temperature, it's coolant temperature.
Had the vehicle been used earlier in the day?

Not started for over 24 hours, sat out at curb side car covered in frost

Edit ( there was so much frost I had to give the door handle a hard pull because it was frozen ) Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

It needs lots of cranking even when connected to the jumpers. Like I say, I don't think it's the battery.

I noticed this morning while starting (-8c) it flashed up some faults (HDC and transmission amongst others) while it went through it's first cranking cycle. I read elsewhere that if you turn the ignition on without cranking the engine (clutch not depressed) it turns the glow plugs on. I tried that and waited 5 seconds (didn't see any glow plug light) before hitting the start button and it fired first time!?! Once started there were no signs of the faults.

I'll try the ignition on procedure again tomorrow morning and see what happens.

Why the hell it have to be like this... why they cant design it to work like manualy from button etc, just like older cars, you just turn the key to glow so much as u want!

this could be one kind of project to somebody to figure out if it could be manualy done Smile??

same in here sometimes it shows glow light, but im doing this 2 step ignition, just setting up the powers whit out clutch on floor, 3-5 times just pressing it on and waiting until light goes of and then again again

I would have "guessed" that this would help but only doing it twice, on another vehicle I used my clip on ammeter on the first start sequence and the glow plugs were pulling 40 amps and reduced to 15 amps....the second start sequence they started at 20 amps and reduced down to a few amps which showed they were up to temperature and the resistance changed .....so two or three times maximum I think would be beneficial but passed this then I don't "think" you are getting a benefit.....I will try and get some glow plug amp readings from the Freelander 2 tomorrow morning Black FL2
