Glow plug light duration

Hi
As I have the car for only two weeks I dont know if this is normal or if this might be an issue - I found that when parked outside during night the glow plug light doesn't come on in the morning.Car starts and runs fine.I suppose the glow light should come on for a few seconds in these ambient temperatures ( -2 deg.C. ) should't it ?

Thanks

Not noticed mine has a glow plug light actually, theres just a small delay in very cold weather before the starter kicks in, this will be the glow plugs warming up.

There is no glow plug light on later models (11 onwards I think). All automatic.

Dealer tells me (having they say consulted LR) that there is no time delay on early models and the only way is to turn on the ignitionfor a few secs before starting. Don't think I've ever seen a glow plug light. Suspect they don't work any more anyway. Still starts OK, but with a bit of smoke when very cold.

Dunno where your dealer got that from. He should know anyway without consulting anyone.
My 08 FL2 has always had the delay, at -10 or so, this can be several seconds.
I still got a short delay today at 3 deg c. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Nor do I. I pass on the info, but didn't say I believe it.

Never had a delay on mine. That's why I'm thinking they're not working (and why I asked the dealer. Ask a reasonable question, get a highly dubious answer).

Another dealer lined up! We don't get very low temps in London but it started fine at -5 in Northumberland last week. Took a bit longer to crank and smoked initially - as I wrote, all the signs point to glow plugs not working. At present, it ain't a problem.

Sounds like it to me. After the delay when very cold, mine cranks for the normal time athough it cranks a bit slower as you'd expect.
Should be a software mod, hope you get it fixed. I hear it was -20 in Westminster today Rolling with laughter Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

In addition to Alex's link, here's a copy/paste on its operation (if you can make sense of it) Confused
This is from the FL2 manual but I don't understand "ignition switched to mode II"

Quote:
OPERATION

There are three phases of glow plug heating: Pre heating, crank heating and post heating. The ECM (engine control module) determines the heating times from the ECT (engine coolant temperature).

The lower the ECT ( engine coolant temperature) ,the longer the heating times. When the ignition switch is switched to mode II, the ECM ( engine control module) calculates any required heating times and, if heating is required, energizes the glow plug relays in the BJB (battery junction box).

When pre heating is required, the ECM (engine control module) also sends a message to the instrument cluster, on the high speed CAN (controller area network ) bus to request illumination of the glow plug indicator. The glow plug indicator remains illuminated for the duration of the pre heating phase, or until the ignition switch is turned to the crank position , whichever occurs first.

If required, the ECM (engine control module) keeps the glow plug relays energized during cranking and for the duration of any post heating phase.

I have no light on mine, and no light when just ignition on. Had dealers check it out, and no other in show room at the time had a light either (61 plate). -5 here in east riding and delay of about 2 seconds but no light!!!
