Big caravan towing

Hi,

Currently tow a 1640 kg MTPLM Swift Challenger Sport 636 twin axle caravan with a Disco 2 Td5 manual.
Possibly changing it next year just wondered does anyone tow similar sized van with an Freelander 2, what it tows like, stability / economy wise

Big improvement performance wise after towing with the TD5, you won't believe the difference.

you will need a man with red flag walking infront of you, and a huge crate of champagne bottles to hand out to affected motorists caught up and delayed behind you.

I've only towed my pegasus mk1 twice , it's a wee bit lighter than you're van . Best tow car I have ever had , I had to hold the beast back at about 75mph . When I got the hang of it I got 27mpg, I don't travel light , 2 Aquarolls, wastemaster and a full size air awning all in the van .
Basically it's as solid as a rock.
Hope this like works . I did a outfit match on the caravan club website . Guessed at the age of car and van .. It's not a good match 91% http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/CaravanClubAp...anId=11247 Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

I tow a SCSport 636 too though mines reweighted to 1800kg

No issues towing at all, (bar the DSC kicking in for some reason on the first row) even fully loaded Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Thats interesting, and good to hear. I was worried with the lower weight than a Discovery the Freelander might be more easily upset by the weight of the van.
How did you go about having the weight re plated BTW? Mentioned to our supplying dealer when buying but they didnt want to know - can it be done retrospectively? Well pleased with the Sport seems to be a great van.

Having only joined the forum I maybe shouldnt comment - but what's with Chicken George? Seems to be one or two just like him on every forum Rolling Eyes

CG hates caravners, he thinks they hold up traffic but he is happy to drive around in a tractor with an unsafe trailer holding up traffic. Mr. Green Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Sumatra Black

Had a td5 manual for 10years with lighter van 1400 kg. Which was great until the end! The fl2 manual tows much better, very stable. Only 20mpg at 60 towing about same as d2, but 40mpg solo vs 32.
Only negative is lack of low range which was useful trying to park van on our drive which is a bit tight.
Also got us out of a CL in hills near Sheffield through a foot of snow up a rough farm track, not sure if it is possible to reproduce that test with fl2. FL2 11 S Black 😂

I just contacted Swift and they told me my dealer just had to order the new weight badge and they post out along with the new documents, simply then stick new badge over exsisting one

Cost £50 iirc

If your dealer doesn't want the work then order through another one Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I do find the low range box really useful for parking the van and it has helped on occasion exiting an uphill gravel covered site with a 90% bend - heaven knows how front wheel drive cars managed it!
Having said that its not as if Im using it every day or week for that matter.
An auto F2 would be my preference but my wife would drive it regularly and simply wont entertain one.

well excuse me for having an opinion on this forum about freelanders, maybe stick to caravan forums if you dont want hear from people who are not happy about caravans, free speech

instead of considering how large a road block you need to tow, why not consider how small a one you can get away with public spirited At work

Why read the caravan section of this forum if you're not interested in caravaning? They are sections of the forum that I'm not interested in , thus I don't read them. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!
