That seems expensive for the oil? I'm in Oz and it's generally a pricey neck of the woods but I buy Valvoline 2 stroke racing oil, which is JASO FC grade and costs $9.95 for 1L that's close to half the price you're paying. It also comes in a container with 100ml graduations so it's easy to use at the pump.

My current car is a Skoda Yeti 103TDI DSG 4x4 rated at 6.7L/100km. I averaged exactly 6.7L/100km for the first 3,000km without 2SO to let the rings bed in and at 12,000km it's averaged 6.2L/100km with 2SO. By calculation not the optimistic readout.

I have never noticed the DPF regen operating but assume it must. Out of interest I just took a torch and looked inside the tailpipes. They are amazingly clean, much cleaner than a petrol engine and no sign of any soot, just shiny steel! It sounds more like a petrol engine than a diesel, especially when you blip the throttle.

Has TUV examined this?......then again I remember them being quoted as 'proving' the effectiveness of what turned out to be utter c..p!

Some real revelations in the last 78 pages!

I've checked out a few other forums where the use of 2T oil has been suggested and it has mixed feedback. That said, I haven't read anywhere that adding the 1:200 ratio of 2T is harmful in any way. Can someone please point me to a thread if they know differently.

Is the 2T addition recommended/tried by anyone on a VW TDi PD engine (12 years old, 177K miles)?

Also, Yahama Fan has questioned the use of the standard 913B engine oil for a FL2. Does anyone have any guidance on suitable alternatives?

Cheers.

Almost all of the negative comments come from those who have never tried it. Why do you think those that use it bother to post? If it did nothing or caused problems why would they post the opposite? The results are real and you can simply add 300ml of FC grade mineral 2SO and top the tank up to find out for yourself.
If you also find it's quieter and smoother etc you also might be inclined to share that with others, despite the armchair critics.

If my memory serves me right, I recall TUV doing research into additives, in the past, being quoted by the product suppliers, but seemingly no research institute has bothered in spite of all the glowing reports.
That's my concern.

That's quite reasonable to have those concerns and it will worry you if you do try it. So probably best to give it a miss.

I have now gone through 7 tanks of diesel, all full refills.
In all, I have 5 tanks with 2SO added, 2 with none.

Consistently, measurements are showing that 2SO does reduce fuel consumption.
On the average, I am getting almost 100km more mileage per tankful.

Having said that, there seems a little more smoke emission with 2SO and how this affects MOT emissions is yet unknown.

That's a big gain in fuel economy.
Are you adding the same amount when you fill up or are you working it out from the trip?
Mine averages 6.3L/100km calculated[5.8 by the long term reading] so I add 100ml for every 300km on the trip because 300km is going to take almost 20L.
What oil are you using. FC mineral?

Results are convincing enough from the fuel economy point. Unknowns include exhaust pollutants, wear and tear of injection or even clogging etc.

I am using full synthetic 2SO at a rate of one capful (very unscientific) to a fuel gauge division.

The synthetic oil could be causing problems, apparently it doesn't mix well and bond with diesel as mineral does.
I would stop using that straight away, excellent lubrication but poor combustion with diesel.

Use an FC grade mineral oil with the lowest ash content you can find.

The ratio isn't critical but about 1:200 is the best spot from the mass of reports it's based on. The way I mentioned works well.

Done properly it should extend the life of the fuel system and keep it clean. It should also result in a cleaner exhaust with lower emissions.

Your increased smoke could also be due to overdosing. If you know how much diesel a fuel gauge division corresponds to, then you could measure the volume of the cap and adjust your dosing to be around the 1:200 .

I put 50ml markings on an old plastic soft drink bottle and use this to set the dose when refuelling

The FL2 has a 70 litre tank, so 1:200 corresponds to 350ml of 2T oil.

Yamaha Man recommends the use of semi-synthetic as it balances a decent quality oil with a reasonable price. You can get semi synthetics in FC and FD grades for very low ash content.

I am personally using FB grade mineral 2T oil with good initial results.

Yahama Fan has questioned the use of the standard 913B engine oil for a FL2. Does anyone have any guidance on suitable alternatives?

Thanks.

My current garage reckons Castrol Edge is the best and that's what they use at services. A previous garage reckoned the same but agreed that Magnatec was probably ok. Both say that the recommended oil is poor in comparison and don't use it on any vehicles they service.

If I recall correctly Yamaha also suggested Magnatec as a suitable and preferable alternative?

Happy New Year to everyone

Castrol Edge is the one all the dealers seem to use. Use search to have a look at other threads, rather than hijacking this one. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
