Aux Audio Wiring

Right, I have a 2011 facelift FL2 with the Alpine stereo (I believe it is amped) and the aux input in the rear centre.

The way things are set up just now, I have a phone cradle mounted in the top cubby which for me works really well - means I have my phone, music and sat nav all within reach.

However, this means I have to have a power cable running from the front lighter socket and an audio cable running all the way to the aux input.

What I would like to do is run said USB power cable and audio cables down the back of the dash. I would happily disable the aux input and use the cable coming out the cubby hole. Ditto for the lighter socket if need be.

Is this straight forward to do, or would the USB power bit be an issue as I'd still need some sort of charger in there?

Thanks

Does the aux input go to the rear of the head unit? That may be easier as it sits directly bell the cubby hole, as for power, very easy to come off F5 in the passenger footwell and put a socket in the back of the cubby with a low profile USB socket in it.

The head unit is easy to remove once the dash front is off, the threads on TOMTOM build in will describe how it comes apart.

Hope that helps a little Thumbs Up

This is where my knowledge falls down a little...

When you ask if the aux goes in to the rear of the head unit, I have no idea. The current aux is at the rear between the 2 front seats, by the rear socket. I simply want a 3.5mm audio cable in the cubby that is connected to the stereo. I assume the current one runs past the handbrake and gear stick and into the back of the stereo. So I was wondering if I can simply unplug that and plug mine in where it came out. Never seen the back of it so don't know.

Interesting about the F5 usb socket - that would be lovely.

There's still this bit of me that says I shouldn't be screwing around with my £16k car.....

This would be ideal, fitted straight into the back of the cubby box and the power from a flying lead piggy back type fuse from F5 in the footwell.

The aux in, if your unsure about removing the head unit simply wire a flying lead from the existing socket up to the cubby hole, most of the wire will be hidden.

You could install a USB adapter into the rear dc socket and plug a usb bluetooth receiver into it it with an audio lead into the aux input

I put a bluetooth receiver hooked into one of these...

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4Pod-3600-AS-r-...33783cb0a3

...which connects directly into the wiring loom on my 2007 FL2 (causing the rear AUX input to be disabled).

I also placed a magnetic Qi charger for the nexus 5 with the power for both the bluetooth and the charger all coming from the F5 fuse in the footwell.

All the wiring etc is bundled in the cubby-hole behind the painted perspex blanking plate I made.

Now, I get in the car, stick the phone on the cradle charging and get my voice calls over the stereo! 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Thanks for all the tips. Djwhyte is the closest to what Im trying to do. Although there's no need for Bluetooth audio if I can get an audio cable down into the stereo.

I have currently run the audio cable as neatly as I can from the aux, along the side and up into the cubby but its not a long term solution.

The car already has Bluetooth so calls aren't an issue.

So how easy is it to get a cable from the fuse box in the footwell up to the cubby?

Pretty simple. You would need to take the cubby out and drill a hole large enough for the plug to go through. If you do this in the base the rubber mat will cover it if you ever need to reverse the procedure. Look at the retrofit TomTom thread for full details. http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic12741.html Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Ta. That was very comprehensive.

Didn't really cover the audio cable though. Is it obvious when you see the back of the head unit what to unplug in terms of the six cable? I'm assuming I unplug the one that runs to the current aux port and then connect my own.

Indeed, although that loom includes more than just the AUX connector.

The eBay thing I linked to just provided a 3.5mm headphone plug on the end, which you could connect into your phone. You could also connect a USB charger to the F5 fuse as shown in the thread linked by pastmaster and pass this all through a small hole drilled in the cubby box.

Should sort you out nicely. 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Will take another look at that bit of kit. I should add I'm not using an iPod/iPhone.
