Garmin 2798 install

Hi all,

After seeing a few of the members install a Garmin 2797 I decided to go one slightly better and go for a 2798.

This includes DAB traffic signal which works really well. Thanks to all of the guidance of the other members.

Thumbs Up

Hi your Garmin install looks great. I also live in Essex and am looking to replace my old Sony unit with the Garmin unit you have. Can you advise where you got yours from, was it a local dealer? Was it easy to fit? Thanks Paul.

great install.
one question: do you use the bluetooth handfree function? if yes, how is the sound in the speaker? and how are the others hearing you talking? not too much noise?
thanks and great install one again

Looks good, did you install it yourself? From a time when dinosaurs weren't just confined to zoos!

I don't but the voice commands work really well and the rear speaker is massive so it should be good!

Thanks but it looks SUCH a good fit in the FL cubby hole, is there a frame that you had to knock up? How about the power supply & GPS aerial inputs? From a time when dinosaurs weren't just confined to zoos!

Nope, had nibble a few bit of plastic on the underside as it only just fits in.

As for power its a piggyback fuse connected to a aux socket thats tucked under the carpet. The DAB lead runs along the glove box and up next to the left hand air vent. Thumbs Up

Hi stownrow, Excellent fit and looks very good. For some reason the 2798 is not available in Australia, but the 2797 comes with the traffic signal feature so I imagine they are similar. I hope you are pleased with it.
I actually removed the frame surround from the Garmin so that it fits against the console surround. It was an easy task but I'm not sure it was worth the trouble looking at you pictures.

Cheers, Graham

Looking at the prices and updates for the LR sat nav up to 2013 model, it seems to make more sense to buy one of these and see if it can be interfaced with the existing wiring, there are certainly more options on the Garmin than the very basic LR (Ford) sat nav which is not user friendly my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I had my garman fitted by the garage. The thing they did was to fit the surround which was a big mistake as it blanked off the on/off setting on the screen so it is perminantly on until the engine is switched off . sound is very good from the speaker inset on the top of the dash and is completely independent from everything else. The other problem is to update the data does mean removing half the dashboard to get to the Garman to remove it I think, not that I have tried
If this is any help

I suspect that with a bit of messing about with USB leads and the 12v adapter you could leave a flying lead in place that you could plug either a laptop or a power lead. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Hi realspeed, As Dartman the one points out you can easily fit a USB lead in the Garmin data socket and lead it into your glove box for future updates without having to dismantle the dashboard. Whilst you are doing that the first, and hopefully last, time you can fit a switch in the power feed to the Garmin that will enable you to turn it off independently of the ignition.
