Handheld GPS - Trekking

thinking of taking myself out into the wilderness a bit more on foot

Ok more days out walking the hills and dales than real wilderness Laughing

I'm no good at map reading and compass skills, so thought what about handheld GPS

Garmin GPSMaps seems to be the one to go for

Garmin GPSMaps 62s £299.00 (my Price £239.00 with discount)
https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/outdoor/ha...63801.html

or the newer Garmin GPSMap 64s £400 (my price £320 with discount)
https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/outdoor/ha...40022.html

Admittedly i know very little when it comes to this sort of thing, and these might be overkill for the time begin

these appear to come with 1:50 OS maps, the additional birdseye view, where you can download additional imagery for X Sq Mile where your going to be walking (not sure if this includes UK as the video was American)

Those in the know, can you find downloadable way points, to just upload? for example, download a map and waypoint if i decided to walk up Snowden or Wearnside etc

or do you still have to sit and plot your route, via Garmin Basecamp and then upload to the device Embarassed

1:50 OS maps, is that suitable for walking, or better to buy better ratio?

Wrongside of 40, so time to get fit, well thats the plan

I use the ViewRanger app on my phone, or on a 7" tablet if I want a bit more screen area. It uses OS mapping, with your choice of the 50,000 or 25,000 series. There's a cost for the OS maps, but if you buy by the 'tile' it's pennies.

I find there are advantages over a dedicated device - it's one less thing to carry, it offers various route planning _and_ recording facilities with upload/sharing, and can also be used in-car when off tarmac. You can also load the maps onto different devices without having to pay again, so I can access my maps and routes on all my devices. Plus, of course, you're not tied in to an expensive stand-alone device.

Only real downside is that continuous use of the route recording facility can kill a phone battery in a few hours, but I haven't found that a real problem.

I get lost after leaving the front door so GPS for me is useless. In fact I have to go up to the prettiest girl around and say " Excuse me I am lost can you direct me back to your place?" Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

You need to be able to use map and compass before you go out with a GPS Smile A GPS can for one reason or another stop working and then you are in the Poo! Shocked

Keep to low level walking / well defined trails. watch the weather and don't be afraid to turn back or cancel.

Make sure you know fully how your GPS works and carry spare batteries for it.

Enjoy Very Happy Very Happy

Ended up buying a Garmin GPSMaps 62s this morning

For a very good price of £141.00 inc P&P

Comes with full uk maps and topo and city maps

It's a seller that sells used ones, that have either been sent back and fixed or simply sent back to garmin by larger retailers because they didn't sell it. But they double check them and post them out along with 2 years warranty and extra goods like car and bike brackets

Savings were good enough and hopefully C&E won't pull it when it arrives

I use the 62s for search purposes, its very good GPS and you got it at a cracking price. The cost we paid was considerably more and that was buying 40 direct from Garmin. Very Happy
