For The Love Of Cars

Just a reminder that For The Love Of Cars tonight (8 p.m., Channel 4) features the restoration of a Series 1 which has been "neglected for more than 40 years". Hopefully of interest to one or two here.

Re the Mexico, they made it sound fabulous and the best thing since sliced bread.
.
Can anybody confirm my memory that there was also a twin cam Escort which might have been badged as Lotus and secondly that converter called Jeff Uren sold a version of Escort badged as 'savage' which had the 3 litre v6 engine shorhorned in. He also did a similar conversion on the Cortina.
.
Kind regards from Fred

There was definitely a twin cam one.

I restored a mk1 a few years ago.

Started off like this:

And ended up like this:

Here's some pictures of my resto if anyone's interested.

Oh, also did one of these too.

Nice to do, not so nice to drive nowdays - noisy, smelly, useless heaters, brakes, wipers, lights, seats, steering and suspension although they were bloody good in their day.

My mis spent youth was spent owning and driving around in a succession of Lotus cars. my first was an A frame Mk1Cortina with aluminium bonnet, boot and doors with 'airflow' dash. It cost me £300 Shocked The water pumps were a nightmare,as the head had to come off to replace them, till a conversion came on the market. A pair of 45 dellortos with meshed trumpets gave them a great induction roar. A pair of Cibie headlights on the front and air horns and it was all set for the traffic light races against the Cooper 1275S boys. Laughing

Series 1 looked fantastic after the restoration. Real shame Philip Glenister is ruining this programme. He is dis-interested to the point of rudeness to the enthusiasts he is sent to meet.

I can't say he really bothered me, but the programme was supposed to be about the car, not him! Far too much Glenister, far too little on the restoration. Here's the original wreck - here's a bit of chassis welding - here's a bit of upholstery - here's the finished result. It could have been so much better - even 5's Classic Car Rescue gives us more than that!

i watched the Mexico one, lovely car for its day, but i agree with Pab

I wanted to see more of the processes used, not just we have to keep with the original spec and a bit of it and the end result with him giving it a bit of juice round a industrial estate

bit more hands on, would have been better Thumbs Up
