see what a tyre vulcanising company can do

I believe Andy (mcPhersonstrut) had it done to a winter tyre and it was fine

My local tyre place has only ever carried out repairs on the flat of the tyre safely in from the sidewall.....from what they say then you cannot repair a sidewall puncture ......this might not be fact but they are generally really helpful Black FL2

gilfishman Idea
I have a very good (probably around 6 to 7mm tread depth - would need to go to garage to check) GW that you could have for £50. The drawback with this offer is that you will have to wait until we are next in Blighty (no travel plans at the moment) and pop over to Derbyshire to collect. If this idea is remotely useful then let me know.

looking at this site there is a mix or whether it can legally be done

but when a chap says you can as he does it for a living, i guess its possible

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/?t=60959

It comes down to the "are you comfortable" driving with a repaired sidewall tyre I suppose and comparing this to the cost of new verus repair

I have a tyre of my wifes, loads of tread on that i am going to get it repaired this way, and keep it as a spare tyre, she however only does low mileage and it might be out of DOT date when i need to fit it

Gillfishman,
I also have a spare Wrangler with about 6mm of tread. Attached to a standard pattern 17" wheel (the old GS - yours may be different). I could let you have it for £75.00 (a bit more than Athelstan as it includes the wheel). Depends on your location whether it's worth your while - I'm in Cambridgeshire.

Courier from here in these Swiss alps to Blighty will cost you about the price of a new tyre. CH not being in the EU means transport to and out is criminally expensive. Big Cry

Unless you can wait till we come over Past master's option is attractive. Idea

I had a similar experience - car was 2 -3 months old and a large nail had entered the tread and exited through the side wall. Tyre place said no option of a repair so virtually brand new tyre had to be replaced. Big Cry Not a happy chappy. gone MY2010 GS TD4 Manual Stornoway

I've got a full size spare, it doesn't look to have been used much (I bought the car when it was two years old). Its got a side wall repair, I don't know if it had a puncture or not buts its got a vulcanised patch on the side of it. I've had the car almost two years and the spare has kept its pressure, I don't know what it would be like if it was driven on? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

My local tyre place have also told me in the past they can't repair sidewall punctures - last time I had that problem they said because of the flex in the sidewall when cornering, braking etc they wouldn't do it - ( don't know if is illegal or not ) but they were talking from a safety point

Here's my tyre that's been repaired, it was done before I bought the car so I don't know if it's legal or not.

I don't think I would run on that - even as a spare!
