Stupid key fob

What a stupid idea the key fob is. Mine is currently stuck, I can wiggle it out but the car still thinks the key is in the fob so still starts with nothing in there. I can't lock the car. Can anyone tell me what possible advantage there is in the key fob operated by a little electric motor? I have 2 other cars with keys and all the same remote buttons. Those cars still work with the key even if the remote batteries are dead. And the fobs cost an arm and a leg, and the batteries go dead, and are difficult to replace, and if you unlock the car with the hidden key the alarm goes off. What moron thought this up? I'm not a fan of the key fob....is anyone listening from Land Rover?

.....and no it isn't in park. I hope all you UK guys are safe from the floods. It's a drought out here.

Only an idea, but have you tried the trusty "hard reset"?

If that means disconnecting the battery for a while and touching the cables together, then yes. But why should I have to do that to let the car know the "key" is not in the slot? A key is so much simpler, it either turns or not. Something that is supposed to make the car harder to steal has my car sitting outside, unlockable and able to be started by simply pushing the button. It's up there with being stuck without 4wd in the outback a few months ago because a broken sensor wouldn't allow it to engage, or driving 200kms in my wife's seating position because a fuse in the seat blew and there wasn't a spare....

Piece of poops

Agreed Mikehzz, its a piece of techno rubbish - I would much prefer a simple quality component to the spring driven pop in and out clap trap that is the key fob - there can be beauty in simplicity but LR are not familiar with the concept.

I also had problems With my 2 keyfobs for fl2 07/08, they simply dont work. You can read about how to fix the fob i tecnical forum, but here is my short verson:
1. Buy new rechargeable battery type Panasonic VL 2330 3 volt lithhium on e bay.. Cost about 7£.
2. Take a "Standley knife" and cut the fob in 2 pieces. Take time , follow the bottom line of the fob and take care. Be patient
and after a while you can break it apart With a small schruwdriver.
3. If you not are an " expert" go to a local radio/tv shop and they will help you to change the battery. very cheap.
4. Use superglu and put the fob together again, carefully.
5. Dont try to open/Lock the car with the fob.
6. Put the fob into the "garasje" an start the motor, drive for 30 min.
7. Take the fob out of the car and try to Lock/open doors.
8. If you are lucky you have saved hundreds of £s !!!

I have!

Yes thanks for that, but I have already done that to one of mine a few years ago. It's not the problem. The key fob works, there is something wrong with the slot that it sits in. The slot won't let you pull the key out and if you do pull it out forcefully, then the slot still thinks the key is in there. The car starts without the key. LR have decided I need to pay hundreds of $$ for a new slot assembly. My post was a bit of a rant about why we have a fob in the first place when a key is simpler and cheaper.

The latest FL2 does without the docking slot, provided the fob is in the car it will start - but is there a manual over-ride incase the car doesnt recognise that the fob is in the car? Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black

An 'over-ride' would surely defeat the object of security, might as well have two wires hanging down that you can twist together just in case Confused

That was my worry.
I find if I Re-lock the car and then un-lock it can then find the key.

I've had no problems like that with mine, but you're on a lose situation because if the dealer can't replicate it there is no fault Exclamation
Have you tried the other fob with a good battery in Question

mikehzz - partslandrover on ebay in the UK has one listed - item eBay Item No. 380733928102. He posts worldwide. Assuming it doesn't need programming - that the key and ECU are code specific, this may sort it. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red
