After a bit more investigation today ive found the belt tensioner seems to be bouncing on tick over, when held with a long bit of wood against it the noise stops.

My advice is to buy a new timing belt kit including the water pump. |

Thx for your speedy reply steve, I bought the belt and tensioner and after removing the old tensioner and inspecting, I couldnt find any deposition of belt material on the tensioner or the idler pulley. That resonance rumble bugged me for ages, so I went ahead and replaced the belt and tensioner...brilliant, rumble gone! I couldnt find anything amiss with the tensioner either..

The belt tensioner seems to be a common problem. Noise varies as well. And oddly, it's not covered on the extended warranty (or at least mine wasn't). The workshop were amazed by the noise and said they'd never heard one like it (I thought initially it was the steering pump, which they had just replaced) but I bet they've had quite a few more since then.
