help with rear diff

I am repairing the rear diff on my 09 freelander and need a bit of advice .I have the 41mm extended socket but not the spacial tool, and I am interested if any body has repaired a diff without using the special tool . the 2 questions I have are :
how do you stop the pinion from turning ? and is it a right or left hand thread ? I suspect it is right handed but using the special tool you turn clockwise , I think that is because the tool turns the shaft rather than the nut . and to hold the pinion I have wedged a piece of thick rag between the crown wheel and pinion and ti ia still sitting in the vice in one piece
thanking anybody who can help
Doug
