Engine vibration noise

Just trying my luck by asking but has anyone come across an engine vibration type noise but deffo not an internal problem.
The noise is like a rumble vibration (not big end type rumble).until checking it out a was sure it was the plastic cover over the top of the engine vibrating but not to be Crying or Very sad .Its that sort of noise.
Its only ever there on tick over and more so when cold,
Any more than tick over and its gone, Also found if you load the engine up in any way eg turn on air con or heated rear screen/lights again the noise disappears(All still on tick over)
Just thought would try my luck b4 removing no end of parts so I stand a chance of locating the problem.
ps, It sounds to be at the front left, alternator air con pump area but had these items been at fault I would expect the noise to get worse when they were turned on but this is not the case

Thanks steve

After a bit more investigation today ive found the belt tensioner seems to be bouncing on tick over, when held with a long bit of wood against it the noise stops.
Thought number 1(wish full thinking) is the belts stretched to the limit of the tensioner allowing the belt to bounce it.
2.I need a new tensioner (week spring)
3 I have a Censored bearing on one of the auxiliaries.
Cant see it been number 3 as in my mind the noise would be there all the time and not just on tick over.

First port of call is a new belt over the wend, I take it the easy way is to remove the osf Censored shield to access the belt ?

Comments and thoughts more than welcome.

cheers steve

My advice is to buy a new timing belt kit including the water pump.

Hi,
Giving the wheel a good clean up helped no end but for the sake of 30 od quid I fitted a new one.
Cleaning the wheel up for me was as much about making sure that's what the problem was b4 I spent money on new parts Thumbs Up

Hope that helps

Thx for your speedy reply steve, I bought the belt and tensioner and after removing the old tensioner and inspecting, I couldnt find any deposition of belt material on the tensioner or the idler pulley. That resonance rumble bugged me for ages, so I went ahead and replaced the belt and tensioner...brilliant, rumble gone! I couldnt find anything amiss with the tensioner either..
Thx very much.

Think I may have the same problem.

The noise does sound like a loose plastic cover vibrating, but the noise goes away when the engine has warmed up.

The belt tensioner seems to be a common problem. Noise varies as well. And oddly, it's not covered on the extended warranty (or at least mine wasn't). The workshop were amazed by the noise and said they'd never heard one like it (I thought initially it was the steering pump, which they had just replaced) but I bet they've had quite a few more since then. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS

Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
