Would that be the same for automatic transmission, I usually just leave it in park and do not touch the EPB. Guess I should go and have a read of the handbook! |

AsI see it (and my previous posts will show how unreliable I am) the EPB on an automatic is a simple on/off switch with auto disengagement on driveaway. |

On the automatic at work the EPB only comes on if applied manually but goes off when you drive off. |

Leave it in 'park' only at your peril unless on the flat, the small 'pawl and engagement looks no stronger than a watchmakers timepiece.

Good point, fortunately it is parked on my drive which is flat. However, I take your point and will in future apply the EPB when ever it is parked up. |

like you my drive is flat and I don't bother with the handbrake, I just let the car settle first before moving it to 'park'. It's ever since I first saw how flimsy the mechanism looked that I treated it with a little care |

I've had my F2 since July and the EPB has been annoying me with its auto operation as I leave the car standing for several days sometimes ( on the flat - its a manual) and I've never been one to leave handbrakes on for days on end after big trouble with an Astra years ago which jammed the handbrake on and needed AA recovery.

Spot on, R reg Merit diesel estate. It was a good car otherwise. Sold it to my cousin in 2006 and he only just scrapped it last month. I had mk4 and mk5 after that, then went to the Freelander2 after buying a disco 300 tdi as a toy. Love both the landys |

LR must have modified it (ie.made it cheaper) as on my 09 SE auto the handbrake (conventional) has only ever been applied if the gradient is about 20% or more. Otherwise it has stood on my drive (gradient approx 5%) every night with only the transmission brake holding it with no ill effects. Bill Life Honorary Member of Wallasey Motor Club.
