I have a 2010 XS manual 26K fully serviced. I have a poor throttle response compared to the wifes 2009 manual. Hers is serviced at Strathearn Eng mines at Main dealer. Anybody offer any suggestions on reason. neither car has any mod or mapping adjust. JB19

I'm not happy with the throttle response on mine either - 12MY GS manual. Seems slower to pick from idle than it should be which has had me crawling away from junctions etc. on times. I think I'll give the dealer a call as I think it's a bit dangerous as it is. I have to remember to 'lead' with the throttle more than I should have to when pulling off.

Interesting....mines a 2010 XS and lately I didnt think my throttle response has been that good.

I wonder what's going on.

Add me to that list too, just feels lack lustre from pull away. (60 plate xs manual)

maybe the dealer has done a software upgrade when it was in for a service ?

I've had my car since January. It was a pre-registered job so although 3 months old when I bought it, it only had delivery mileage on it. It was fine to start with, and I'm sure this throttle response thing has only developed in the last month or so.

I wonder whether a small increase in the idle speed would sort it out? If I blip the throttle from idle as it is now there does seem to be a slight hesitation. However, if I hold the throttle to give a slight increase in engine speed (to simulate a higher idle speed) and then blip it, I get an instant response as I'd expect.

Trouble is, I don't know enough about how these things work to know if that's a valid test or not! Anyone?

To me, it's the off boost pickup that is crap really. From idle upto the turbo spool up is just gutless.

I imagine the reason likely falls into emissions reductions. If the modern fuelling is anything like the older tdi landrovrs, you basically have 2 fuel rates ... One for the engine without boost and is rev dependent, the second is the additional fuel for when boost kicks in, and you need more fuel for the extra air getting pushed in.

Iirc, the adjuster on the old tdi that changed the ratio of fuel given when off boost was also nicknamed the smoke screw as adjusting it too far would create black smoke.

In a modern engine, they likely want to avoid this and so be quite conservative on this off boost fuel map. If they were to increase the fuelling, that could affect its emissions ratings I suppose and work against any savings from stop/start tech.

Leading with the throttle as mentioned earlier is just a meansa to get out of the off boost zone and have the turbo spooled up I suppose.

Find it catches me out on hill starts ... It's just really poor , and also when in 2nd gear too on when navigating steep hills and corners.

I took my11 SD4 in for exactly the same thing - they said they did a software upgrade and it felt brilliant for 2 weeks...

Now its back to being very sluggish when pulling away. Its all very strange...

It took me months to get used to my throttle (2011 manual). Quick roundabout entrances from standstill have left me in a dodgy position more than once ! I now move off with zero throttle relying on the anti stall, then when I am completely off the clutch I accelerate and that's the quickest and smoothest way of moving for me. _________________

Interesting technique , might try that later on.

The more I watch what the car is doing, the more I think that it's the ecu cutting power just as your pulling on the biting point, which is exactly what you don't want when you're trying a hill pull away or high demand pull away.

Also interesting that after 2 weeks you think it changed. I wonder if there is a learned response map to the throttle. ... And could it be reset easily ?

Lastly, I'm going to see if it dies in the same manner when using other terrain response settings.
