Hi all,

I have a feeling that I may be posting something which may have been submitted before, but I couldn't find anything on ' search'.

When I cleaned under the bonnet when I first picked my FL2 up last month, I noticed a sticky oil patch on a hose directly underneath the air intake moulding where there is a joint/split just to the left of the four 'spigots'. See pic circled in red.

no it's a common problem, and just requires the joint on the plastic air intake moulding redone.

mine was done under warranty when the car was less than a year old, using a large jubilee clip.

there are a few posts on the forum re this.

Thanks Iain,

I did remove that section, and cleaned it inside and especially around the joint. It looks like the larger Jubilee Clip to be the answer then! 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

Mine was the same so I removed it and cleaned it out,then refitted it with a little rtv and a proper jubilee clip and so far everything is ok.

I recently found oil dripping onto the engine cover from a split at the moulded bellows style joint near the other end of the 'organ pipes'. Had to buy a new part from Dan at Duckworths.

OK - stupid question time. Apologies in advance for this......

I remember reading on here that a little oil in this pipe is "normal", and that occasionally it leaks as indicated by the OP.

However, I am unclear as to WHY there is oil in this pipe in the first place? If this is the air intake for the engine, why is there oil in it?

Wouldn't it be "bad" to have oil in the air intake???

It's a question asked in innocence, borne simply out of my lack of knowledge.......happy and willing to be educated......

choccymonster, some oil present in the intake is normal but I can't remember why !!

I'm sure it was Alex who explained the whole situation in previous posts. If you search the topic you will find the answer. ( sorry but I don't have time at this particular moment )

It's the exhaust gas recirculation system pumping the c**p which comes out of the engine back into it. And yes, it is bad to have this stuff in the air intake! As usual it's to do with the current obsession with emissions - pumping some exhaust gas back into the engine reduces emissions slightly. Supposedly.

This has nothing to do with the EGR system. It is oil steam from the engine breathing system. There is an inbuilt system to separate the oil from the air, but it is not perfect and some oil will slip by and condense in the "organ pipe" Search for the "Swirl Flap" topic and you will find some photos and solution to prevent the rest of the oil to evaporate into the air intake system.
