I was a bit worried when it flashed up on my SD4 a few weeks before my service, apparently down to 'forced' regeneration as the normal regeneration will not have to artificially raise the temperature by using excess diesel fuel in the process.

As SteveNorman has already said, there are 2 service reset procedures to carry out when doing a service. Both should be carried out at the time of servicing Strathearn Engineering

Is it something to do with poor quality disel? I just imported a Freelander 2011 SD4 to Sri Lanka. It has done 8000 miles and indicating the ' Oil Service required visit dealer' Massage. |

Check the vehicle manufacture date. if it's 1 year from the date then you will get the massage. My Freelander also gave me the same msg on June 1st 2012. Then i check the book and found out that the manufacture date was 1st June 2011. So nothing to do with the oil. Just a reminder. Even i checked the oil manually and found ok. So after couple of weeks i had my service with frontier and they reset the msg for me. and today 23rd June 2013, i have been getting the msg for 23 days and my service is due in 23rd July. just double check if your is EU5 then you have DPF. Just make sure you drive on our only highway for at least 20 min per month to clear the filter. |

Sorry Ben, but just to contradict your comment a little: I bought mine new/unregistered in October last year, with 8 miles on the odometer. 8 weeks later, the oil service light came on, which Stratstones reset in January this year, 3500 miles in. Since then, it hasn't missed a beat, and is currently just approaching 16,000 miles...by Friday, when it is due to be serviced, it will (just) have exceeded that. Naturally, the oil service indicator hasn't come on at all, which proves to me that it is merely a timer/reminder clock that works on 12 month cycles, rather than monitoring the quality of oil constantly like the BMW/Audi/Vauxhall ones do. For the record, although it was registered in Oct 12, it was manufactured in late Jan 12, which explains why it came on in the first place back in late Dec 12. Foraging near Gaydon.... 覧覧覧覧覧覧覧 MY13 HSE Lux SD4, Baltic Blue - current, 30,000> miles without fault MY12 HSE 2.2 SD4, Sumatra Black - gone after 10 months/43,000 fault-free miles |

firstly; The statement above is not mine. My experience is that the OIL SERVICE REQUIRED VISIT DEALER warning comes on at about 11 month cycles. Probably because I do a lot of short journeys. Whereas the SERVICE warning comes on about 30 days before the annual service is required. They have to be reset independently and the owner cannot reset the oil warning, that has to be done by a LR dealer. |

We just bought an 11 plate FL2 which was serviced a month ago at 38k miles. When the car got to 40k the OIL SERVICE warning came up. I emailed the dealer service dept and the response was....

Most modern cars will require greater investment in dedicated equipment. The oil service indicator is just the tip of the iceberg. The days of a small garage doing any car have been numbered for quite a while now. What about autobox & diff software update on a service to prevent gearbox damage? https://www.freel2.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11383/Q106.pdf regards Steve |

Does anybody know what trips the service indicator for oil change on later cars? Is it a clever device which measures pil dilution or is it a counter for DPF regeneration?

I asked this question and the answer I got was that the ECU monitors and records various engine parameters. Two of which are the number of cold starts and the number of forced DPF regenerations. We know that a forced regen of the DPF pumps diesel into the DPF and burns it to raise the internal temperature to burn off the soot. Somehow or other some of the diesel finds its way into the sump and dilutes the engine oil. The OIL SERVICE REQUIRED VISIT DEALER warning comes on after a predetermined number of forced regens has been reached. It seems there is no actual monitoring of the oil quality. My driving profile has been the same since I bought the car new and I do too many short trips. As a result I get the warning each year about a month before the service is due by date, not mileage. My warning came on 2 weeks ago and my 3rd service is next week. What I don't know is what happens if you ignore it (not withstanding engine damage in the longer term) does the car drop into limp mode?

Manuel - please let us know the details of your vehicle. Enter these in your personal area and they will appear as an icon under your name (wave mouse over small Land Rover to the left of this to see how it works). The message is related to DPF, as explained above, but export vehicles were fitted with DPF before the UK vehicles, and seem to experience different problems.
