2008 LR2 SE [125k miles] - Losing 1 QT Oil every 5K Miles

I bought my LR2 in November of 2014 and had no issues with the oil light coming on in-between oil changes, however, recently every 5,000 miles I have the light come on and have to add 1 QT of oil. Interestingly, the first time I noticed the issue was after an oil change where my mechanic used ENOS Synthetic 5W-30 oil.

So, my questions: 1) should I worry about 1 QT every 5K miles, where it wasnt' an issue before? 2) is it possible that ENEOS Synthetic Oil is to blame?

All thoughts are appreciated.

Maybe the last oil change wasn't done properly. Oil may be leaking into engine protector cover. Take it to a Dealer and get another oil change with the recommended Castrol type. Then monitor for the next few miles.

Oil level should be checked once a week as a matter routine maintenance, as per the handbook.

Agree with the comment above. The inner sealing ring should be checked every time you change the oil filter by pressing it and ensuring it returns to the original position. Not sure this is in the manual but an old thread on here showed that someone had an issue due to the seal being stuck. Not sure this is your issue and the garage probably won't know to do this but I would take it back. If there is no external oil showing, it must be being consumed within.

With 125k miles on the clock I would not be too concerned but I would double check that no oil is leaking. Remove the protection plate under the engine and have a look around, from memory it is six bolts.

Check coolant that there is no oil in it.

Check oil level on a regular basis when the engine is cold and on a level surface. Which everyone one will be doing, like checking the tyres on a regular basis. Takes about 2 minutes for peace of mind. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

yes, it's possible, I'm experienced on similar problem with different engines.

Sometimes happens when using oil out of spec: carefully check the ACEA spec of your ENOS and compare with LR spec.
This not means that ENOS isn't a good oil: simply could be the wrong oil for your engine Wink

In my knows for the petrol engines a A5/B5 0w30 is required

As others have said, if you were having no problems with excessive oil consumption before the oil change, logic tells me that either it wasn't topped up correctly after the oil change or your engine doesn't get on with that brand/type of oil. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

My Freelander used to use oil like you described so I Switched to using Comma x-tech no she uses considerably less oil then using Land rovers recommended oil as it seams to burn quite quickly. I check my engine oil on a Weekly basis a sort of Sunday Chore for me as I think the little oil mine uses ends up being wasted by the turbocharger which ends up in the intercooler as I have the occasional drip of oil from that area.

Oil consumption increases as level drops, you should be checking and topping up long before oil light comes on.
At your mileage the consumption is not excessive. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

Agree with both items.

The engine is going to run hotter if it is low on oil, & if the engine has other issues, especially with it's age, low oil might be enough to cause other problems. An oil warning light is telling you that the oil is TOO low. The level should be between the upper and lower level on the dipstick. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Age and engine type ? Petrol ? I assume you have not got a DPF ? Blue smoke ?

How many miles do you do between oil changes ? The recommended/correct spec is more important than company I guess. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

When the oil was changed did the mechanic put a new sump plug wash on. Only a dollar or two & should be replaced after draining. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Thank you all

Next oil change I'll have my mechanic go back to Castrol full synthetic 5W-30 (which is what I used before).

Answering a few of the questions posed: my engine is the original 3.2L--Inline 6 and change the oil every 7,500 miles/6 months; no blue smoke, but have always had a strong smell of fuel from the exhaust.

Again, thanks to all.
