Contemplating changing shaves so I thought I would post this topic. I have always used a dry shave and have been loyal to Philishave.

I know that a dry shave can't shave as close or smooth as a wet shave but the dry shave is so much easier. No faffing around and no bloodbath but I find that even with post shave balm, the dry shave makes the skin feel sore and sometimes red and still misses some stubborn hairs/stubble. Then there is the pain of cleaning the damn thing and new blades at some point which aren't cheap.

So, is it time to move to camp bloodbath? Is the wet shave misunderstood with regard to 'bloodbath' or indeed overrated?

Or would I be better going for a foil shaver such as Braun?

From what I've seen, most of the male hairdressers have converted

You can't beet a wet shave, closest to a wet shave has to be a Braun 390 series. Other than that you can try this, but be careful.

All depends what kind of rush and mood I'm in - I shave with both dry & wet (not at the same time tho)
I would say 80% of the time I have a wet shave but if I'm running late and off out I would dry shave to avoid the bloodbath and turning up with a tissue covered face

Hi Doc,

For years I used the usual gillette/wilkinson multi blade razors and a can of foam. I always got cut and always had skin irritation etc.
Then I tried a cheap Philishave. It took a while but eventually got a technique which seemed to give me a close shave and of course no blood bath. The Philishave died and I ended up with a Panasonic foil shaver. This thing gives me as close a shave as I've ever had (in fact so close that on occasions it has cut me). That would be the end of the story but one day I heard an article on Radio 4 about shaving and the general consensus was that a shave with a double edge razor was the safest and best shave you could get. I really fancied the idea of a fresh wet shave again so I gave it a try.
Basically, unless I go against the grain I cannot get anywhere near the closeness of the shave that I get from the Panasonic. I also still get cut but nowhere near as bad as these 5 blade things. If I was to go back to wet shaving permanently it would be with the double edge razor. However, I'm back on the Panasonic foil. I can't get a better shave with my face. Things to consider :
1) Everyone's face is different. What works for one person will not for another. I had to try the alternatives to
see what worked for me.
2) The Panasonic gives a great dry shave but will allow you to do a wet shave with foam etc. This is a waste
of time in my opinion. When you lather up your face and use a blade, as you shave you scrape away the
foam. With an electric shaver you just move the foam around so you can't see the bits you've missed.

i used to use the multiblade razor, then decided to try some cheap BIC/Gilette twin or single blades and i got a better shave with these

My mate did the same, our conclusion is the multi blades try be too advanced in design, 4 or 5 super sharp blades against the one or two standard sharpness blade cause too much irritation as you have more blades scraping over your face

I bought a £150+ philishave (3 rotory heads) and found that caused shaving rash, even with clinque pre electric shave products etc

Nowadays I have a beard trimmer set to about 1-2mm and haven't shaved in about 5 years Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I can't be bothered with all the hassle of a wet shave, so it's dry shave all the way for me. I've mainly used Braun foil and Philishave, with probably a slight preference for the Braun.

As regards shaving rash with a dry shaver, the best thing to use is nothing! Let the skin's natural oils provide the lubrication, so importantly don't wash beforehand - shave then wash. Has worked for me all my life, but then my skin is not particularly sensitive in that regard.

Been doing some research online and some Braun models are half price at boots. The 390cc with self clean is down to £79.99 from £169.99.

The blades on mine are about due and will cost around £30 plus I have read that foil shavers give a closer and less irritated shave than rotary (neck and chin at least). LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I hate shaving so it's a foil shaver 2 or 3 times a week, I'll leave it as long as I can without having to use the beard trimmer.
I like to think of it as a rough attractive feature but my wife says I look like a tramp
