looks like faulty electrics to me, maybe shorting out behind the panel

but i bet the car would stink of smoke, and that will linger for ages as it will be in the fabric

That's quite a serious 'thermal event'.
I notice the vehicle is fitted with a towbar.
I wonder.................. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Could be a great opportunity to buy a basic and slightly shabby set up seats and trim panels and then have the car properly trimmed in decent leather...

Buying and repairing this type of vehicle damage is easy straightforward work . The fire damage wouldn't frighten me one bit.

I've done a number over the years. Re the interior you clean it starting with Fairy liquid and a water extraction cleaner like a George after the hard stuff fairy you follow with 1001.
.
HOWEVER
.
In this day and age the repaired car such as this has dramatically reduced residual value. Buy it repair it use it but don't expect to be able to trade it in at your Dealer, he won't want to know because its got a cat D marker on HPI records.
.
I've done write of cars and motorbikes for over 40 years as a hobby; I've given up because of how joe public is frightened off by a cars HPI status.
.
Kind regards from Fred 2010GS Auto ex Celeb, Santorini Black, 2011 facelift , spoiler, spats, mudflaps, LED footwell lamps, Witter detach,

Interesting to read the effect that HPI has had on the market.
