Because on a steep incline the locking pin can be jammed against the pawl making shifting out of P very difficult, although that said, a rubbish handbrake may just be as useless.

Anyone with sense would apply the handbrake first while depressing the brake pedal, let the car settle and then move into 'P'

Nah, I always put on hand brake, then into neutral, release foot brake then go to park. Stops that horrible clunk when next selecting a gear. |

Yes, great habit to get into. To be honest it was advised to me on an L /R experience day. |

That's the pawl, pressure from the gear teeth can make it hard work, slamming it into park at very low speed, as Yanks like to do, knackers the pawl to the point it either breaks or slips.

Yes without a doubt, I know how auto boxes work, and without a problem not use a hand brake any day. The shoes on the freelander handbrake are useless unless you have bedded them in for a bit anyway.
