Because on a steep incline the locking pin can be jammed against the pawl making shifting out of P very difficult, although that said, a rubbish handbrake may just be as useless.

Yanks have more issues than any other race on earth:lol:

It does make it very difficult to get out of park if the weight of the vehicle is resting against the pin.

Nothing wrong with the yanks.... Maybe a few little issues

Bit when parking an auto most people would...... Put into P then apply the hand brake, when no doubt the weight of the car is already on the "pin" and the hand-break is not really doing anything

Anyone with sense would apply the handbrake first while depressing the brake pedal, let the car settle and then move into 'P'
The 'pawl' is not the strongest made.

Nah, I always put on hand brake, then into neutral, release foot brake then go to park. Stops that horrible clunk when next selecting a gear.

Yes, great habit to get into. To be honest it was advised to me on an L /R experience day.

That's the pawl, pressure from the gear teeth can make it hard work, slamming it into park at very low speed, as Yanks like to do, knackers the pawl to the point it either breaks or slips.
Looking at it, would you trust a two tonne 30k car to stay where it is.

Yes without a doubt, I know how auto boxes work, and without a problem not use a hand brake any day. The shoes on the freelander handbrake are useless unless you have bedded them in for a bit anyway.

Look through a window of a new car on a transporter and see if they use a hand brake on the new cars they deliver........
