Wales 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black
Aircon during the cold spell

I know it's not exactly the right weather for this, and it's been a long cold spell, but anyone turned the HVAC temp right down to activate the compressor?
I do this once a week during a cold snap, it's good for the aircon system Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

....errrr me.... wanted to see if I could get it to go really cold as a test....

The result was 'its either a bit wimpy or needs re-gassing - Halfrauds for about £70' ( although cold ).

That said I believe you should run for at least 10 mins a week because of the bugs that live in the system.

The closest I get is pressing the 'Prog' button in the mornings which turns on the Air Con.

Think the temp switch has to turned right down to activate the compressor clutch......... Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I tried to say no, because the closest I get is just having the Air Con switched on. I don't turn the temp down at all to bring the compressor in.

Surely the compressor comes on whatever the temperarture setting (assuming the fan is switched on and you are not in econ mode)? I thought that was how you got hot DRY air to prevent the screens from misting up? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

But as long as the compressor is turning everything over it should be fine, your only doing it to stop the seals drying out. I'm with Steve D on this, you don't need to work the compressor hard.

that's what I thought, no need to have the temperature right down low to lubricate the seals etc ?

Correct ( at least thats how I understand it )

Aircon on all the time is the best as it cools the air first ( which has the effect of drying the air as it passes over the evaporator ) and then heats it back up to desired temp using the engine coolant.

So its basically on all the time, and cause its dry, its best to have it on when demisting the screen

Some members dont use the air con all the time though, I remember someone from Yorkshire didn't when attempting to improve his mpg, he even tried folding his mirrors in an attempt to get above 27mpg Shocked Whistle

Leave the AC on all the time. It will keep the system lubricated and working efficiently. My mate is a uk tech advisor for a car manufacturer. Top advice. Minimal saving in mpg. Buy a Clio if you want to do 60mpg Very Happy * GONE. GS TD4 Manual MY2013. Orkney Grey with privacy, cold and clearview packs, armrests (a must!) and a spoiler.
