England 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Zermatt Silver
FL2 SD4 Auto Low MPG 27-29MPG Seriously concerned.

This post has been edited by the site administration team
Merged into existing MPG discussion thread.

I have had my March 2012 Freelander XS SD4 for just over a month and drive it pretty tamely (no off road yet) My first tank of fuel I got 29.86 MPG and my second tank of fuel I got 27.68 MPG this is horrendous for normal on-road driving. The current mileage is 8156. By comparison my 2005 E320 CDI Mercedes Auto estate was averaging 37-40MPG. All the official figures say the Freelander should be equal or better than the Merc. I seriously need to do something and would welcome all comments and suggestions. I have looked at the other posts and people seem to be getting mid 30's to 40's but cannot see any solutions or why lower figures might be happening. Thanks Nigel

Nonsense. Expectations for mpg are set by the manufacturers published data. This gives you an approx. guide.
Add to this a bit of personal research on forums such as this and you get a good idea. If you then find your vehicle is not getting in this range you have cause for concern and investigate. You dont just ignore it because it's a "land rover" (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc
(Going) 2013 TD4 GS Auto - Santorini Black with black leather. Cold Climate, UK Lighting & Armrest Packs. Privacy Glass. LR Rubber Mats. Full size spare.

So let me get this right. If Land Rover advertise the FL2 as a four wheel drive and it is not that would be ok??

If Land Rover and other users are giving respectable MPG figures of course we know these are not real life but one would expect within 10% of them. I also moved from a big E320CDi diesel beast which is supposed to give worse MPG figures than the FL2 but the FL2 is far worse. I don't think 10MPG difference between the FL2 and a Merc E320 estate is acceptable.

Sorry I don't find your answer helpful and makes a mockery of Land Rover producing advertising blurb.

I see you have the SD4 engine the same as me, I have averaged 40.5 mpg with cruise control at night at 60 mph on the motorway. Besides that being boring and not real world during the daytime I find any deviation above 60 mph and there is a dramatic downturn, not a gradual drop off but a steep decline in MPG.

That said, my MPG does average out at 33/34 with mixed driving so maybe you have inaccuracies in your indication and perhaps ought to try it by tank fill and odometer.

33/34 is quite acceptable to me and not near the figures that LR give out, but personally I didn't buy it with MPG in mind although yours are not quite right for some reason.

The only time mine dips below 30 is when towing.

As for someones perceived unhelpful post, sometimes we word it wrong or its read wrong or we got out of bed the wrong side, I'm guilty of this on more than a few occasions but there's now't meant by it, the internet is emotionless. Thumbs Up

Fortunately we all don,t believe the marketing blurb from Land Rover, saying that I would have another one in a heartbeat. But it's built like a brick outhouse, has a fuel sapping 4x4 transmission and to be honest a diesel engine design that's not that modern. And cuts through the air like a brick

All factors that will reduce your mpg Land Rover has never really been a brand that people buy because of its good fuel consumption !!

Your missing the point. He is not expecting his FL do be more economical than a 2L diesel Ford Focus. But I am sure he does expect it to be broadly in line with consumption achieved by others on this forum which it is not. Hence his question. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc

Below are my mileage and litres and MPG -I agree the only way to be accurate is to check at fill-up time not by onboard electronics.
13/2/13 Mileage 7437 put in 44.71 litres
21/2/13 Mileage 7772 put in 51 litres 29.86 MPG
9/3/13 Mileage 8156 put in 63.06 litres 27.68 MPG
thanks

England

What sort of roads are we talking, mine consistently averages 35+, I can get 38-40 on a long run which is most of my driving , during the times I am pottering locally, including "playing" on snow covered lanes a few weeks back I didn't see anything below 30.
Have you checked things like the handbrake shoes, make sure there not binding.
Have a run up the motorway, reset the trip as soon as you reach 60, keep that speed for a few miles you should see 40+ figures, anything much less would suggest something not right.

You will have to do it the old fashioned way to get an accurate figure, as you can read here the signal is taken from the ABS module for distance travelled.
Is your average speed open to query as well as it may be this module that is giving the wrong reading, also my range on a full tank has shown a whisker over 500 miles on occasions if I've been a good boy. If the ABS module is giving a much lower range then perhaps its suspect.

Pure speculation on my part Smile but just possible that you are getting more MPG than indicated.

If those figures are by the old way of doing it then there is definitely a problem Houston.

Hi,
Well early days, but on her first decent run Lincs to Bucks, 135miles with a mix of all types of road, she's reported an indicated 41.2 mpg, very happy with that!!! In case your thinking 'girly driving', she is no slouch, staying more or less on the speed limit for each type of road whenever possible, in other words best part of 85miles of dual carrigway and motorway driving at 70mph (ish;-)) Car has 20,600 miles on the clock, so nicely run in, just about the milage the engine is properly losend up I think Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)
