I got curious today and pressed the stop button whilst driving (on the farm lane not main road). A short press of the button didn't do anything so I tried a longer hold down of the button and sure enough the engine stopped. Silly really but at least I know that accidentally touching the button is unlikely to stop the engine whilst driving. |

Chcken George, next time could you -whilst driving- put the gear shifter in reverse ? I'm curious to see what happens next. |

I remember doing that in my driving instructors nissan micra as reverse was where 5th was in the golf I also practised in. It made a terrible noise but the gear didn't engage.

I beleive you should always have the option to turn the engine off at what ever speed

My uncles disco started burning its sump oil, basically the only way to stop an engine thats doing that is to stall it but his disco was an auto, not good! |

I did the same in a similar situation, but I recall that the engine stopped when i was at a very low speed. Did you remember at which speed you were driving? |

Just out of interest it is imposible to engage reverse when traveling forward there is an electronic interlock to prevent accidental engagement of reverse when traveling forward. |

Yes, it was something around it. I didn't check it carefully. ![]() |

With an auto, a short press won't stop the engine if you're stationary but not in park - a long press will though. I guess its the same thing. - Mike |
