I got curious today and pressed the stop button whilst driving (on the farm lane not main road). A short press of the button didn't do anything so I tried a longer hold down of the button and sure enough the engine stopped. Silly really but at least I know that accidentally touching the button is unlikely to stop the engine whilst driving.

I thought about that, and did the short press, but never got round to full on press

Chcken George, next time could you -whilst driving- put the gear shifter in reverse ? I'm curious to see what happens next.

I remember doing that in my driving instructors nissan micra as reverse was where 5th was in the golf I also practised in. It made a terrible noise but the gear didn't engage.
Also the idiots at nissan used to fit the windscreen wiper controls and indicators on the wrong side of the steering wheel, so during my driving test the instructor said turn right and I put the wipers on! I failed that first test as I was too cocky and pulled out in front of distant oncoming car, there was no chance of a collision but he said I should have waited instead.

Very strange

My dealer told me that you couldn't do that with the stop button, car had to be stationary before you could switch off the engine, said it was a safety feature..........imagine what would happen at motorway speed  ______________________

I beleive you should always have the option to turn the engine off at what ever speed

I recall a story of a chap in a car and his cars accelerator malfunctioned and he had no choice but to pull over onto the hard shoulder and switch the car off as he had no other way of stopping as he could not put the auto box into neutral either Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

My uncles disco started burning its sump oil, basically the only way to stop an engine thats doing that is to stall it but his disco was an auto, not good!

Just out of interest it is imposible to engage reverse when traveling forward there is an electronic interlock to prevent accidental engagement of reverse when traveling forward.

I did the same in a similar situation, but I recall that the engine stopped when i was at a very low speed.
Did you remember at which speed you were driving?

Yes, it was something around it. I didn't check it carefully.

With an auto, a short press won't stop the engine if you're stationary but not in park - a long press will though. I guess its the same thing. - Mike

Don't know why, but did it myself twice yesterday!
I have a Nokia handsfree kit fitted with a remote control button that has a central circular button you press to accept/end calls and activate voice command. For some reason I kept going to the LR stop/start button yesterday....and it did switch the engine off whilst I was moving......hope it isn't a bad habit I am going to get into!

I pressed the button today and it started! anyone else had this problem?  Freelander 2 - SE
