A couple of years ago I owned an Audi, I pulled up next to an old fiesta at a set of lights. The Fiesta boy was a boy racer, as the lights changed he zoomed off in a puff of smoke, out of the corner of my eye I saw a tow rope. In a split second it went tight and BANG his towing eye shattered into dust!! Silly Censored tried racing me while towing another car(and I was only crawling along)!! Me and the wife thought it was funny (the people being towed didnt)!! Seriuosly thats the kind of person that shouldnt be allowed near a tow rope. Ive never towed before, dont know if i'd risk it personally. I'd help out where I could in a winter situation but not sure about towing. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

well we're not insured to tow another vehicle are we ? (i dont know ) I'm just thinking if something happened like we slid off the road and took the other car with it all the hassle it would cause. When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

More importantly..... What happens if you damage your own motor in the process ?

Will "the saved" be willing to cough ?

Think not in most cases

Well I haven't bothered towing anyone as yet but I have found out the licence issues don't come into play. I asked a traffic cop and the categories that people always mention that are no longer auto included on licences, relate to trailers. A towed vehicle is not a trailer and thus licence issues don't need worrying about. Recovery towing over short distances is fine.

As for insurance and someone trying to sue you, that's something that can and probably will crop up. I am covered if I decided to tow because I simply telephone the call out manager at Peak 4x4 response and give him or her the details of the car to be towed and location etc etc and I am covered on the response group's insurance. cynics.. so do you just drive on by? where is the Landrover Love in that?

The last car I pulled out of the snow on Monday was a standed mother with 3 kids in the car and a bootload of shopping (made getting her towing eye out an event)

Unfortunately LRSWE there'll be no Land Rover love coming from me...in the same way as there's never any Audi love on the motorway when they're up your arse flashing away!

Mistajimbo has a point...I'd tow them out my way if they were holding me up!

In Sweden the appreciation and camaraderie is probably different to here...I towed a Prius a couple of years back...or was about to until he couldn't resist a jibe about 'stupid 4x4 being good for one thing at least'. I quickly unhitched and drove off sticking 2 fingers up. If someone's going to be a d*ck when I'm putting myself at risk out of goodness then he's ruined it for everyone. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

It's not a black and white decision (that's not a racist pun Smile ), I would help retrieve the people only after weighing up the situation:
whether its a remote area, whether its a family with kids, whether they are elderly etc.
Chavs can leg it, as well as anyone I perceive to be a threat to myself.

I wouldn't attempt a retrieval of the car as I wouldn't have a clue if they knew what they were doing. I'd hate to pull someone out only for them to drive into the back of me, so it would be only the offer of a lift to somewhere.

I think EYorkshire has hit the nail on the head and has highlighted most people's natural reaction these days. Incoming threat to yourself or your car has to be borne into the equation. Otherwise, the worst case scenario would be to offer a lift and I somehow think that deep down we'd all be willing to oblige.

Ive never towed before but to be honest I wouldnt know what to do. I'd be frieghtend of burning out my clutch. I do have a tow rope in my boot but its nearly 20 years old. I've helped a before with push starts, jump started a car, blown a ladies tyre up at asda with my pump. Towing wise i'd probably say no. And besides these days, as have been said before, some people arnt gratefull for your help. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

haha mav nice one!!, cant wait...

well, here is a bit of news for you all... After speaking to both the police here, and in the UK.. Should you stop and tow someone out of the ditch, and they destroy their own, or your car... you are completely liable!

From now on, I will be just offering lifts Embarassed

Sad though, as I have previously managed to raise quite a bit of cash for the Orphaned Kids Fund over here in the past - instead of accepting money from people, they would simply SMS a donation on the spot.
