Enough is enough.. make compulsory change winter tyres come in to effect, cuts down on the accidents, roads become less congested and not coming to a halt like most years at the first sign of snow

We had an English engineer based in Germany install some equipment in Huddersfield last year. He said it is compulsory in Germany to have winter tyres fitted. His were white he said. But how would the UK cope if such a law was brought in here i.e. how would such a law be brought in? Would it be compulsory on new cars? Would the public be held to ransom with high prices? It would be interesting to see it being discussed by MP's. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Poorer families are being priced off the road by high fuel costs and road tax, there's no way they could afford a second set of tyres.

any car built after xxxx date and driven on the roads between certain dates need winter tyres if not don't go out on the road or face huge fines

Bring it in gradually, new cars first come with a second set of wheels and winter tyres, then older can brought in, discount public transport during same period, less insurance claims more cars stay at home

Company's can be set up for tyre hotels which brings jobs too

Its an interesting one. Iam sceptical about global warming, theres lots of evidence out there saying that the planet isnt warming and that we will continue to get cold winters. On the other hand, people will say that last winter was really mild, the world is warming up - do we need winter tyres? What would the cost be for a FL2? Wheel + tyre = 200 quid? 800 quid all in? Its alot to fork out. Now if the government was to help out, subsidies for winter tyes. In the long term there would be less money paid out for accidents, time lost by traffic jams etc. Maybe it would be a good thing to adopt winter tyres over here? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

I think they have too do something, discounting buses and train means people still get to work instead of having snow days or jamming up the roads in a inch of snow for hours on end, which benefits the economy in the long run

It would be hard for those who only have limited funds for their car, but with enough notice they can budget for it coming in to force in X years time, cheap set of steel wheels, budget winter tyres, loose a few luxuries to make life easier for everyone on the road come winter, if there not prepared to go without sky movies/sport on multiroom subscription or the latest UGG boots to keep their car on the road come winter, then buy a bus/train pass to get to work

Got to be hard, or even cruel to be better off come winter Thumbs Up

In my country it is compulsory to have winter tyres fitted on any car driven on public roads from 1st of November to end of March otherwise you are in the risk of big fees and also insurance companies will not pay anything in case of an accident.
Honestly I cannot understand that someone is NOT using them as 1cm of snow makes summer tyres useless..(1,5 cm for all season tyres).4x4 is not better than 4x2 when it comes to braking... Confused

Thinking this idea all the way through gets us to people not having to drive OR go by public transport. Lots of year around benefits and possibly a cure to the global warming/cooling conundrum.

So work local to where you live (or other way around); use computers and the internet; tele-conference. It is all there, so could be done. Also buy local produced goods to create work for those living in your area.

But it can never happen. Why? Because Big Business makes money out of the present arrangements - car making, fuel refining, long distance transport, etc, etc, etc - even selling the very salt that your local council has to buy to cause your car to rust faster.

For a long time now they have called this progress. Sad Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

Great if you (they) are stranded at the bottom of the hill, provided they can get to you because of the traffic jam caused by road being blocked.
If you slip off the main road forget it, The AA and Greenflag will not recover you if you are not on the tarmac. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
