We had an English engineer based in Germany install some equipment in Huddersfield last year. He said it is compulsory in Germany to have winter tyres fitted. His were white he said. But how would the UK cope if such a law was brought in here i.e. how would such a law be brought in? Would it be compulsory on new cars? Would the public be held to ransom with high prices? It would be interesting to see it being discussed by MP's. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker. Gone MY2010 Freelander 2 Manual TD4.e S, Alaska White. |

Its an interesting one. Iam sceptical about global warming, theres lots of evidence out there saying that the planet isnt warming and that we will continue to get cold winters. On the other hand, people will say that last winter was really mild, the world is warming up - do we need winter tyres? What would the cost be for a FL2? Wheel + tyre = 200 quid? 800 quid all in? Its alot to fork out. Now if the government was to help out, subsidies for winter tyes. In the long term there would be less money paid out for accidents, time lost by traffic jams etc. Maybe it would be a good thing to adopt winter tyres over here? I think they have too do something, discounting buses and train means people still get to work instead of having snow days or jamming up the roads in a inch of snow for hours on end, which benefits the economy in the long run

In my country it is compulsory to have winter tyres fitted on any car driven on public roads from 1st of November to end of March otherwise you are in the risk of big fees and also insurance companies will not pay anything in case of an accident.

Thinking this idea all the way through gets us to people not having to drive OR go by public transport. Lots of year around benefits and possibly a cure to the global warming/cooling conundrum.

slicks and ice When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car |

Great if you (they) are stranded at the bottom of the hill, provided they can get to you because of the traffic jam caused by road being blocked.
